I always thought that he was kind of cute. Why now and why did he wait so long? I wonder if it had anything to do with the upcoming elections.

Hated him in Dougie Hauser.

And his 1st sitcom as an adult was a real stinker.

His present one is only so-so, but I do agree that he is much better looking these days, a real hottie.

It has been the talk for ages that he was gay. Glad he finally felt comfortable enough to come out. Probably won't affect his hireabilty as he was never the romantic leading man type.

This whole business about Neil Patrick Harris was brought up by the internet gossip Perez Hilton on his web site earlier this week. This queen is on a campaign to out various celebrities as a service to the gay community. His biggest target was Lance Bass for over a year.

The rumors about Neil have been around for years. From my perspective he’s seemed rather comfortable with himself and the fact he was gay had little effect on his acting career in or out of the closet. (Any one remembers Starship Troopers?) Actually IMHO he was pretty smart to tackle this issue the week it came out on http://www.perezhilton.com and end the speculation and publicity.

Neil also seems able to attract the rather hot boyfriend if you look at those pics. (The lucky bitch.) I saw Max Von Essen in the Kennedy Center’s production of Mame this past summer. The production starred Christine Baranski in the title role and Von Essen played the older Patrick in the second act. He’s a very good actor with a powerful voice and likely to make a name for himself, besides the one for banging Doogie Houser.

Here are the links from perezhilton.com to help follow the story.

(Anyone notice in the pic with this link that Max Von Essen bears a striking resemblance to Scott Adler? :+ ) http://perezhilton.com/topics/exclusives/have_you_slept_with_neil_patrick_harris_20061102.php

This is such non-news. It had always been known or assumed that Doogie was gay. I don't see what the excitement is about. I don't get why that website takes such great pleasure in "outing" celebrities. They said that Anderson Cooper and Jodie Foster were next! Wow they are right up there with fresh news. Please. Oh my, next they will tell us that Rosie O'Donnel and Ellen Degeneres are gay.

Personally, I don't care who is gay, and I don't think that we need to know all of the details of celebrities' lives. This whole "outing" thing only has any value if the person being outed has been publicly anti-gay and hypocritical (like that preacher in Colorado or Mark Foley). Otherwise, I am happy to leave folks to their own private lives.

I saw Neil Patrick Harris on Broadway in "Assasins". He played Lee Harvey Oswald. He was terrific, and who knew that he could sing. He had a great voice and a great stage presence. He is a very talented actor.

Good luck to him and his nece boyfriend.

Come on JT !!!!!

I LOVE a good bit of gossip, don't you. There is nothing wrong with it so long as it isn't malicious and even that can be fun if you're feeling naughty.

I guess my question is, why are so many people caught up in the personal lives of actors? They have a job like most other people, except that we get to see them work. Personally I would love to see reports on the lives of those who work for the National Inquirer for instance, or of the guy who (supposedly) outed Doogie(if he wasn't outed before). No one is perfect (with the exception of Steven Draker and Scott Adler:-))....now this is not meant to slight other escorts, so please don't be offended.

Is it safe to assume that the percentage of gay men in the theater is a bit higher than the general population? According to my friends in the theater, this would be the case.

Unfortunately, the industry hasn't always been kind to men who were open about their sexuality to the general public. So when I heard that "Doogie" had come out of the closet (albeit perhaps forced out), I realized that perhaps things are getting better that more and more gay actors are willing to be open and honest. If this is so, it's another good sign for all of us.

Don't forget that there is a large difference between what is "allowable" in live theater vs. in screen acting. Always has been, as far as I can tell. And, in an interview, Patrick McNee (stolidly, though romantically, hetero) assured me that gay live theater actors are even more accepted in England.

Bilbo,

Did McNee talk about his own upbringing? On talk radio in San Francisco he spoke about his mother divorcing his father, taking up with another woman and cross dressing him when he was a kid ....

(With such a background, I can imagine him being a little more relaxed than evem the average Brittish actor about such issues...)

Lehmkuhl Says Harris Was `lanced'

Nov 7, 11:17 AM (ET)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Doogie Howser wasn't outed, he was "lanced."

http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/ap/PEOPLE_REICHEN_LEHMKUHL.sff_NYET124_20061107114043.jpg

That's a new term to describe celebrities who have been forced to reveal they're gay, said Reichen Lehmkuhl, boyfriend of 'N Sync star Lance Bass.

"It's to be outed by someone in the public media and to a celebrity, and Neil Patrick Harris, I understand, has been 'lanced,'" Lehmkuhl told AP Radio News in a recent interview. The term was coined, he said, after Bass revealed earlier this year that he is gay.

"They're calling it a 'lancing.' It's to be 'lanced,'" Lehmkuhl said of Harris, who said last week he is "a very content gay man living my life to the fullest."

Harris, who played the namesake doctor on the TV series "Doogie Howser, M.D." as a teen, made the disclosure weeks after Perez Hilton, the self-proclaimed "Queen of All Media," posted an item on his Web site, PerezHilton.com, pleading with the 33-year-old actor to come out. Bass, one of Hilton's favorite subjects, disclosed his sexuality in July.

Bass, 27, said he had decided to "speak my mind" because rumors about his sexuality were starting to affect his daily life. The singer also said he was in a "very stable" relationship with Lehmkuhl, 32, a former Air Force captain and winner of season four of CBS'"Amazing Race."

"People should be able to come out on their own," Lehmkuhl told AP Radio. "I don't know so much that it helps gay equality if a celebrity is outed by someone else and it shows that they're forced out."

"It seems like it just continues the vilification of homosexuality in the media in this country," he said.

Lehmkuhl is promoting his book, "Here's What We'll Say," which recounts his time keeping his sexual orientation a secret from Air Force colleagues.

RE: McNee

We're talking about an interview I did for him in the 80's. Love to answer you, but I don't remember. I do know that there was an autobiography of his that I got my hands on later. I think the title was Blind In One Ear. I do remember a long, long list of out of the closet actors he gave me, without any real emotion about it rather than gentle amusement at me for not knowing about them. And I am talking very large names, ones who had been recognized by the Queen. Unfortunately, my tape recorder was on the fritz and he went too fast, and amazed me too much, for me to write the names as he gave them to me. Ah, well....
