I'm not a lawyer, but think twice before calling the police if this was in Texas. If the police think someone paid for sex, that's now a felony on the first charge in Texas. New law that I believe is less than a year old.

Make sure it's a deposit you can afford to lose. I don't think a small deposit to show good faith is unreasonable, but asking a client to advance one or two days worth of their wages ahead of time isn't reasonable even if the provider is honest and intends to follow through.
