I haven't seen Soderburgh's edit but in reading the book and from what my memory says, HAL9000's breakdown is crucial to the story, with a post-mortem in the sequel 2010 being integral to that plot also.

I can't speak to your classmates financial situation back then, but if you look from the 30,000' level, they were out of work while they were receiving assistance, and have probably repaid the treasure dept many, many times over through taxes on their earning once they started practicing. So, many people would say that was a success. Even former senator Barbara Boxer was on welfare for part of her life (certainly not while serving in the senate !) ...

Here, "Brun" refers to his hair color - the female form is "Brunette". My guess is that "chaamt" was a typo for "charmant" (charming). And I think a better rendition would be that he's in the village, but can travel.

I'd be willing to bet that if you had a friend take pictures and used just 3 or 4 that you liked including at least one barechested one and used hat for a rentmen ad, you'd soon get enough business to fund hiring a professional photographer. If you look really good in suits, modeling agencies are going to recognize it. A friend works as an auditor, and he recalls working at a client's agency in LA, and the owner literally ran out the door to engage a woman he saw passing on the street (who was not dressed like a fashion plate ...)
