The problem in this case is human nature. Pretty people can get away with things a lot easier than we trolls can. It's probably not unreasonable to think that if Derek is this handsome now he might have been extremely handsome from high school on. So if he's always been treated as a pretty person, then he expects to get away with things. And obviously, at least by stereotype, gays are obsessed with external appearances.
