Saw this article today, and thought it might be something to share for discussion. A study about college degree-holders the US showed that gay men were more likely to have a college degree (or two) than straight men. (The one demographic that seemed to have slowed in acquiring degrees over the period examined are gay women.)
Now, I am fully aware that many here do not self-identify as gay, and while I don’t know the exact questions posed to respondents were anything other than self-identification, it seems unlikely they would have to slap a dick out of one’s mouth to get confirmation on that question.
So my references here using the plurals “your” “our” and “we” apply to men who would check the box next to Gay rather than the one next to It’s Complicated.

It does ask about why this may be occurring, and suggested that one reason may be the need to excel in areas under our control to compensate for not living up to societal expectations which is not under an individual’s control.
I wondered if it’s also a need to extend the period where “I‘m so busy with schoolwork” remains a viable excuse for not finding that girl to “go steady” Ugh.
I had a girlfriend for all 4 years of university, and of course knew in my heart it was doomed. I worked hard to get my BFA, had multiple offers for grad school TA’s but I did not want more school. In my line of pursuit, advanced degrees are only an advantage in pursuit of careers in academia - No thanks.
Not long after college ended, so did the girlfriend. For the next few years, having been with men but still not out to family, I was able to use poverty as my excuse (BFA, remember…) for not finding the right girl.

Is this data somehow indicative of our need to fend off or delay societal disapproval? Or are we just smarter, in addition to being more clever, talented, funny and having better taste?

Did you get a degree, two-years of college or more? If you are looking back from a distance of more than a few years, do you feel your sexuality played a role in the motivation required to get it? Did you go beyond 4 yrs? Did you also excel in school as an adolescent, and feel anything akin to the “best little boy in the world” syndrome?
Be sure to show your work on the back of the page. Pencils up. Time starts now.

Yes, of course it was a joke. You displayed something called common sense.

What's foolish and sad is wasting time calling a comment foolish and sad, especially a comment that was not directed at you.
As suggested above, "expensive" and "rich" are relative terms. So you might think that buying a model X doesn't suggest someone is "rich", but someone else can think that buying a model X suggests someone is "rich". I hope that venting that nasty comment, whic doesn't even make a point that invalidates my post/joke, made you feel better about whatever issues you had going on yesterday.

I know. And my comment didn't say anything to the contrary in any case.

I am reading Forget the Alamo, a fascinating history of how a relatively inconsequential battle in 1836 became a popular (but in many ways inaccurate) legend, and its site a heavily promoted tourist attraction. It's a collaboration among three Texan journalists, Brian Burrough (author of the best-seller Barbarians at the Gates), Chris Tomlinson and Jason Stanford. Texans like to to speak of the revolt as a fight for political independence, but it was no secret at the time that the only important political issue was slavery: Mexico had abolished slavery, and the Americans in Texas were mostly cotton farmers whose economy depended on slaves, their most important "property." The constitution of the Republic of Texas specifically stated that slavery could not be abolished, and no free Blacks would be allowed in the new country. The most famous "heroes" of the battle, all of whom were killed, were William Travis (a shyster lawyer), Jim Bowie (who had fled to Texas to escape prosecution in the US for numerous crimes), and Davy Crockett (a failed politician who made up outlandish stories about his frontier exploits). They were all whitewashed into heroic figures by Texan patriots, abetted by the entertainment media in the 20th century. Even the site of the battle was not the building that almost any American can easily identify when they "remember the Alamo," but a nondescript barracks nearby that had been turned into a grocery store for years after the battle, and that the curators of the site wanted to tear down because it was not picturesque enough for the memorial they wanted to create. It is a classic American story, and a fun read if you are not a die-hard Texas conservative.
