One of the things one has to remember when one sees all the photos in this thread of men in the military is that they were usually taken by their comrades or in a studio. Before the 1960s, it was rare for gay romantic relationships to be publicly acknowledged. The couples in the photos are usually mugging for the camera, in photos that were intended to be sent to the folks back home, especially their wives and girlfriends, to reassure their families that they are so happily involved with their "mates" that they are not engaging in relationships with strange women. Military mail was often censored, and if the censors thought these were photos of actual homosexual relationships, the men would have been in serious trouble.

When I was young, the only persons who would have asked me, "Are you gay?" would have been people who were actively gay themselves. because straight people didn't know what it meant. The first time someone asked me that, I said "Yes," because I thought he wanted to know how I felt about going home with him.

I finally saw the anniversary special on YouTube. It is very well done. I can't remember the last time I burst into uncontrollable laughs, watching all those favorite scenes. I can only imagine what my neighbors thought. This show was so incredibly brilliant in so many ways. Ray Romano looks as though he hasn't aged. Patricia Heaton is looking a little too done. Very sad about the one twin who committed suicide. Very sad.

Those among us who were “boys” in the 80’s were ALL working boys, lol. That rent wasn’t gonna pay itself. Beauty was our currency. Not proud of that, but not ashamed of it, either.
