How comfortable are you winging it for your first time? If you're either really into public play or just want to chance meeting someone who's already got a room, a locker will do fine.
 
Rooms in some baths can offer you more amenities (porn, slings, themes, clear plexi between rooms to watch neighbors, etc). Other baths, it's just a closed door in the event you need a little breathing room. Sadly, not all bathhouses are like Steamworks in Chicago or some of the more storied baths in Europe and Asia.

Hi Larry...I've been to a few bathhouses. I would say you can definitely walk around and watch. Most bathhouses have public play areas where you can absolutely watch what is happening. Typically the people playing in public enjoy the voyeuristic aspect of it. Getting a room is better if you wanted to play with someone and have some privacy, but if you don't expect to do anything the first time, a locker would be fine. To me a room is pretty important because I do like to use if for play.
 
Many bathhouses require a membership and then pay for either the locker or room. If you are just visiting for a short time, many bathhouses will combine the two for a "daily membership."
 
You should expect some features of a gym or spa: A whirlpool/jacuzzi, a sauna, a steam-room, showers, etc. But there will also likely be some more sexual areas with like large mattresses and porn playing. Probably a glory hole room with cut outs for cock-sucking. Maybe they will have S&M type things like a bondage bench or a sling or stuff like that...but not all. Lockers are cheaper but don't provide a place to play if you find any action. I'd recommend getting a room. Leave the door ajar so as to attract interest. If someone wants to give you company but you have no interest just say "No thank you". Most guys accept this as a respectful turn down. If there is a sauna or hot tub, most guys dont mind touching. If objection, just says "No thanks". Remember that everyone has different tastes. Turn downs should not be taken personally. Most of all, have fun. Lots of eye candy even if no action.

The dynamic with much older men is very unique. Their demeanor is almost therapeutic sometimes. They mean every word and they sincerely value your time and company. I don't think most escorts, especially the well regarded/established working guys, set an age limit for their clientele. In fact, most I met prefer older guys to younger. Guys like @Mikegaite are a prime example.

As a client, I would personally email an escort at the beginning, in an attempt to keep my phone clear of escort numbers. I don't generally exchange numbers until close to the actual appointment. My initial screening of an escort I'd rather do via email. I fully recognize it is easier and quicker for the escort to get texts, but I'd rather leave putting the phone # I use for that with as few people as possible.
 
So in short, where I recognize it is much easier for you, and a faster response by you would certainly be had, I and some other clients want to keep our numbers to ourselves for a bit.
