2. Before I forget: Jung Joon Young, formerly the leader of the rock group Drug Restaurant (formerly JJY Band), issued a second apology just before a court interrogation after his arrest for filming and sharing spycam porn of his conquests without their consent. (In the first apology, he announced his retirement from entertainment. His agency terminated his contract with them shortly thereafter.) The apology reads as follows: I apologize. I have committed an unforgivable crime. I admit to all of the charges made against me. I will not argue [about the charges] and humbly abide by the court’s decision. Once again, I deeply apologize to the victims to whom I caused pain, the women who received secondary damages due to groundless rumors, and everyone who showed me interest and love until now. I will faithfully cooperate with the investigations and spend the rest of my life repenting. Source: https://www.soompi.com/article/1311691wpp/watch-jung-joon-young-admits-to-all-charges-and-apologizes-before-interrogation-at-court This is blunter than many, but it is typical of statements in similar circumstances in South Korea. (His earlier statement admitted he shared the spycam video with friends without much of a feeling of guilt. That admission was unusually honest.) Even as a PR move, this is 180 degrees different from what happens in the US. Even the person protesting his innocence has retired from showbiz (for now, at least) and his contract with his agency/record label was terminated. @bigjoey, this is what personal responsibility look like, and it only takes place in cultures that believe everyone bears responsibility toward each other, even if that's not true in practice. Such cultures can also be exacting, judgmental and heavy-handed.

4. This article is a good explainer. The one piece it doesn't cover is that there are credible allegations of law enforcement coverups and corruption both with respect to the clubs where the incident occurred that started all this and the subsequently uncovered chatroom where illegal spycam footage of women filmed in sexual situations without their knowledge was shared. That has people worried that this investigation will be or already has been compromised. https://foreignpolicy.com/2019/03/21/k-pops-sexual-assault-scandal-is-the-tip-of-the-iceberg/ Fortunately this doesn't affect anyone I care about. I like two of the groups affected, but one of them is better off with the guy gone even though he was their leader and in the other case (Seungri of BigBang who's the one accused of promoting prostitution and trafficking to suck up to business investors) I'm not all that surprised. There had been a tabloid allegation that he choked a sex partner without getting her okay. It wasn't treated very seriously because it was in a tabloid.

6. Interesting interview with Now Apocalypse's creator, Gregg Araki. The interviewer, E. Alex Jung, asks some interesting questions about queer cinema. And yes, both Araki and Jung are gay.
7. I believe they are generally so ill that they wouldn't consciously notice it. But a warm furry body is still comforting even if one isn't consciously aware of it. (Speaking as someone whose cat spends a lot of time cuddled up to my side or feet.)
8. I live in northern NJ, so the hamentaschen is usually good.
9. Have some hamentaschen in my honor, assuming you're allowed to or able to eat it.
10. That might be better for me, as I felt Get Out would have been improved had it leaned more towards either humor or horror. The mix it had of those elements didn't entirely work for me.
11. More about him and an IG investigation as to whether he has inappropriately praised Boeing and slammed its competitors. https://www.politico.com/story/2019/03/20/pentagon-investigating-shanahan-boeing-ties-1284597
12. Not necessarily, but the one I remember reading about keeps vigil with people who are about to die. The nursing home trusts her enough that if the cat cuddles up with a patient, they call the family to suggest they visit.
13. Not a CPA but I'm familiar with Forms 5500 and have filled a few out in my day. Also I've worked for the IRS in the past and am pretty good at deciphering IRS publications. DM me if interested. Disclaimer: This would not involve the provision of legal advice, as I haven't been registered anywhere as a lawyer for years.
14. I know about NJ Family Care. I was on Medicaid in NJ and lost it when I qualified for Social Security retirement payments even though Social Security also determined I am currently disabled and gave me retroactive SSI, none of which I saw because it all went to repay the $140 a month (or less) in General Assistance I received and my temporary rental assistance that kept me from being thrown out on the streets. I expected the GA to be recouped but hadn't thought about the TRA being recouped. (And the reason the GA was sometimes less than $140 was because $42 was taken out as my contribution toward rent even though that meant I had less than $100 a month to pay for electricity, internet, gasoline, car insurance, and household and cleaning items. That's ludicrous. That the private insurance market stinks and we need universal healthcare isn't an argument against Medicaid. Furthermore, it's not unlimited, it's a gatekeeper system which is a pain for someone who needs to see a numbers of specialists and has a strict formulary and other bureaucratic restrictions, and while there are sufficient doctors where I am, that doesn't mean they're adequate or easy to choose from. I had terrible experiences with two rheumatologists. And of all the doctors I had seen back when I had employer-provided coverage, only one (the GP practice) accepts Medicaid. I've had to look for new ones. Also I have a four figure bill from the anesthesiologist for my colonoscopy who keeps sending me bills, so no, it is not entirely free.
15. For those of you who don't know, Fox's The Masked Singer (and others throughout the world) is based on South Korean show The King of the Masked Singer. Here's the designer for that show. I haven't watched Fox's Masked Singer because I don't have cable anymore, just Netflix, and the clips I've seen suggest I would enjoy it less than the original.
16. Some people are awful. A long time ago, a dog owner let his unleashed boxer go after one of my cats. The cat bloodied the dog's nose and scooted up a tree. I only wished it had been the smaller alpha cat he tried going after. He would have had his nose shredded and been scared off by the shrieking. I once watched her run another cat off the property. She was very territorial.
17. Probably because when book threads are started here or in the Lounge, they end relatively soon. People don't have as much to say on this topic. I say that as someone who started one such thread.
18. And the Acting Secretary of Defense (or has he been confirmed?) comes from Boeing.
19. That's pretty narrow-minded of you.
20. More about that certification process, which involves Boeing, not the FAA, doing the certification, and which apparently completely failed to note the anti-stall software. https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/how-the-faa-allows-jetmakers-to-self-certify-that-planes-meet-us-safety-requirements/2019/03/15/96d24d4a-46e6-11e9-90f0-0ccfeec87a61_story.html?utm_term=.dd1f73bfd743
21. Especially since lack of access to a working smartphone causes a lockout.
22. This country is equally horrible to working-class and poor people too, albeit maybe over different things. Medicaid isn't easy to get - you have to be really poor ($20,000 a year for one person in NJ is enough not to qualify) or disabled, and even for someone disabled it's a pain; you need to report 5 year's worth of financial information, sales, transfers and current assets to prove you haven't impoverished yourself through uncompensated transfers to friends and family. Gathering all that information takes time and is generally more burdensome for the disabled person anyway. Furthermore with severe or expensive illnesses there are fights over formularies, treatment coverage, what's experimental and what's not, equipment and level of care.
23. Feeling you are a different gender than that assigned at birth = trans Feeling gender doesn't matter or is a phony category or that you don't fit in either male or female = non-binary Feeling somewhere between male and female or masculine and feminine = genderfluid
24. The "modern day Jesus" part is what has me rolling my eyes hardest. Also wondering whether he has thought through his child support obligations considering these children were conceived the old-fashioned way. I have serious doubts that any contractual obligation not to seek child support exists or would be enforceable. Maybe he's judgment proof, but if he ever landed in court I doubt a judge would be sympathetic. Why aren't those who argue against out of wedlock births on this guy's case?
25. I don't know whether the software can't be deployed without it. I've used it a few times to express extreme disapproval, but I usually also comment. I would prefer not to have it. (I am less opposed to a Disqus/Reddit style upvote/downvote system.) Moreover, what you see as bent out of shape could be other people's disapproval and expression of their opinion, which is one of the things a forum is for. If I have to put up with racists, I definitely am not going to suppress what I think of the usefulness of new features. Management doesn't have to listen. It just has to put up with the expression of the opinion.
