And from everything I've read it was a short-lived phenomenon (indeed related to the typewriters of the time) that unfortunately hit while I learned to type in 10th or 11th grade. It was only taught for a few years, and I didn't hear that it was bad practice until only a few years ago. My sister who has worked in journalism & print in some capacity for all her life pointed it out to me. It is a very difficult habit to break.

To continue to digress - most dictionaries revise themselves frequently, adding words or changing definitions to match what has become common usage, even if it was once considered incorrect. They're strict about it but eventually they do relent. I haven't checked lately to see if they've added 'irregardless' as acceptable use, because I'm too apprehensive. And that brings to mind last year's New Years Resolution, to stop using two spaces after periods or colons. It's a difficult habit to break.

I work with a lot of younger people. I know there are plenty of references I make that need to be explained (or just ignored :-)); my co-worker has no idea who "Captain Kangaroo" is. But off the top of my head I can't think of any phrases in that category. Now I'm going to be watching myself all day. Similarly, I work with a lot of people in our Buenos Aires office. They all speak excellent English, so much that I have to catch myself about using expressions - I used 'red herring' yesterday and then wondered "do I sound crazy to them?" Fortunately, they're pretty good about checking urbandictionary.com or something similar. :-) For the record, I still say 'taping' a show.

It seems to be affecting the business too. Detroit Men4RentNow and Rentboy have fewer listings than I've seen in a long time, and the numbers dropped just in the last day or two. I know of a travelling couple that were scheduled to be here this week. When their ads disappeared, I doublechecked and they're in Florida.

Same here in Detroit. Last snowstorm of this size I remember was also early January 15 years ago, right after I moved into this house.
