I have always been Jack to everyone but for any official document I have to use John. I always hated the first day of school where the teachers' records showed me as John and I would have to get them to call me Jack. My middle name is William. I knew I was in big trouble if while staring at me my mother called me John William. I am the youngest of three in my family and my father often called me "the kid" - well into my being an adult.
