Over the time I've been hiring escorts (about three years or so) I've become interested in the economic viability of escorting. How does one make a living at this? Can an escort make a good living, or is the job just a stop-gap for guys who need quick money?

Recently I've hired two guys with totally different views on this. One basically abandonned a career in the computer industry when he found out he could make good money and have fun doing it as an escort. This guy indicated to me that he makes a reasonable income, enough to live in a perfectly pleasant apartment building in Manhattan (an expensive proposition in itself), and enjoy a lifestyle similar to that of other young New Yorkers in "legit" work.

The second guy was totally different, although on the face of it, he should be making more money. He has porn movie appearances that would, I think, give him more marketability than the first guy. Yet escort no. 2 lives in a depressing tenement apartment with little light and unpleasant surroundings, although still in Manhattan below 125th Street, so still expensive. This guy is foreign and sends money home to his family. Perhaps that's why his living standard seemed dismal to me. But I must say, I really felt sorry for him, although he didn't try to make me feel that. I just thought to myself what a depressing life his is. He seemed somewhat trapped in it, without a lot of future prospects. All the same, he was very pleasant and duly enthusiastic during our encounter. I just felt sad afterwards when I reflected on his situation.

I just wonder if anyone else thinks about this when you see escorts. Or if you are an escort, how do you feel about the business of escorting, whether it's worth it, whether it's lucrative or not, etc.

Anyone have thoughts?

I think escorting can be whatever someone makes of it. For some it can be a bit of quick cash and for others a much longer career.

I know for myself I look at it as a means of making a living for a few years. I'm young and cute and do well, but I probably only plan on doing this for another year or two at most.

I have future business plans that I am already acting upon and working on preparing a future career for myself that can last until I am ready to retire (and my cute young looks have passed). I know that I won't be in my twenties forever and while I know that others have pursued escorting long beyond those years, that is not something I want. I feel that there is a time to grow up and move on with life and that is what I am working towards doing.

So catch me while you can. ;-)

Seems like a matter of supply and demand here. Successful escorts certainly have the potential of being well paid professionals, depending on how much they care to work and how often and how much clients pay them. With the going rate being about $200 per session, an escort who works 5 times a week is earning $50,000 a year (possibly tax free). Of course an escort can see more than one guy a day or do longer sessions and earn quite a bit more. I would think a pro who sees two guys a day five days a week at $200 a session and does an overnight/weekend for $1000 each week would earn about 150K a year. I am sure there are escorts who earn more this too

I guess how well an escort lives depends on how much he works and what he chooses to spend his money on. I have seen escorts who live in so-so places who are college students earning some quick bucks along with guys established in the business who work out of nice places of their own or travel and stay in the better hotels when visiting. Seems like there are worse ways of making a living.

Most Young guy's their age donot have this Income.

I doubt that there are very many escorts who can count on having as many customers as they want, whenever they want, at whatever fee they choose to charge. For most escorts the uncertainties (can I show myself with this pimple? I accidently deleted those potential clients' emails! will that nervous-sounding guy actually show up? should I schedule appointments when I think I may be coming down with the flu? etc., etc.) make this "profession" a much less dependable source of income than tax accounting or even waiting on tables. And don't forget the money spent on getting the business, a lot of which may be wasted.

I've met a variety of escorts in terms of business acumen. Two of the older guys (and best) I've hired are very smart about money, at least according to what they told me. One works in the insurance biz and just adds extra $ from escorting clients when he can. Another has been putting his earnings away by buying up real estate.

On the other hand, I've run into some that I suspect are spending everything fast. The worst cases would be the ones spending their money on useless things like drugs.

The tax question is interesting too because, if they don't have another job, they need to show some income legitimately to keep the IRS at bay. So they would need to make up some self employment biz to show at least part of the income.

Actually, the IRS only cares about one thing. That you pay. They do not care what you do. A very close friend who has worked for the IRS for years has told me that that is how the mob gets into trouble... tax evasion. They can't always prove the drug trafficing, but they can prove the lack of income reporting. For example, you can be a paid assassin, report your income, do your Schedule C and show your travel and "equipment" expenses and the IRS will leave you completely alone. An escort is the same way, they "should" be reporting the income. The IRS wouldn't care, as long as they get their fare share.

Just for the record... I don't care one way or the other.

I've been hiring for close to 10 years and have met all of the above. You can make a living escorting if you want to, and a very good one at that. I know of at least 2 guys who made/make 6 figure incomes year after year, and have/had the smarts to invest so they are pretty well set. They are both very good escorts and also very good businessmen, not common. I also have known the guy who escorts for a year or 2 to pay some college(or other) bills, and unfortunately some who ended up with nothing, homeless on the streets because all the money went for .....

Escorting is what the escort makes of it.

Just think back how frequently we see a bad review, scams or some guy posting pictures not of himself. It is sad to think of the possibilities some escorts have at their feet and they just have no common business sense or maturity to make the most of it and end up...

I think we are seeing more and more negative reviews now and too many examples of business immaturity. I guess that just goes with youth. The possibility of travel, tax-free income and men willing to pay just to be with you. Damn, I wish the internet would have been around when I was a twink, well maybe not.

Well for what it's worth, here's my 2 cents worth.

1st - lets tackle longevity.

I think it is entirely possible for an escort to persue his career over many years, should that be what he wants to do. But in order to maintain his client volume, he should be flexible enough to reinvent himself three or four times over time. When he is in the age group of 18 to 23 (or thereabouts) he may do very well as a cute twink type, appealing to clients who prefer younger men. But as he reaches his mid

twenties, he should pay more attention to developing his physique, spending more gym time to develope more muscles and be able to market himself as more of the hunk or stud variety (no one buys a 29 yr old twink). This will probably give him the longest run type-wise as this image can be sold until he is into his late thirties. But as he finds himself in his forties & fifties, his image should be that of a more mature, sophisticated gentleman type, more worldly and knowledgable. By changing his image as time marches on, there is no reason why he couldn't have a career stretching over forty years IF THAT IS WHAT HE WANTS.

2nd - there's the income tax problem.

I would think that as long as he declares a reasonable portion of his income and pays tax on that, there would be little chance of the IRS looking at his too closely. For example, if you earn 90K per year, and only declare 60K, I would think the 30 undeclared would be fairly safe from discovery - so long as you are not careless enough to keep a log of who, where, when and for how much. As escorting is largely a cash transaction type of business who is to prove how much you really make. But if you're dumb enough to buy yourself a Mercedes sports car (for cash) and live in an expensive rental, put Armani on your butt and rack up high Visa bills for expensive restaurants etc., all the while claiming you only earn $35 a year, watch out - it's only a matter of time.

There is a problem associated with squirreling cash away for the eventual start-up of your own business. One day, after it is up and running, you will have an audit and the question of where did the start-up capital come from. If you can't prove that money was "after tax dollars" you're screwed!

The same applies to investing in real estate. You had better be able to demonstrate that the down payment(s) were from the same kind of dollars - after tax.

Having said all that - I think escorting would be a wonderful, exciting way to earn your living, whether short term or for the long haul. Just be careful and more importantly, be smart.
