I just recently rented this Richard Gere classic. I remember when it came out, I wanted SOOOOO much to go see it. I had such a crush on Mister Gere, but I was under age (it was rated R) and definitely "in" (the closet) at the time it made it's theatrical debut (1980 or so?). Plus, I was much too shy to venture down to the local cineplex to try to sneak in and see it. After all, it would've been obvious to EVERYONE in town that I was a homo had I been seen at that movie... .

In any case, I've finally watched it (I'd forgotten what forbidden desires it's tv ads had stirred in me once upon a time), and it was a bit of a disappointment. Of course, there's no way it could've lived up to the ejaculatory esteem a closeted 16-year-old once held it, but still I thought there would've been more to it than the killer Blondie/Moroder theme song.

Anyway, it got me to thinking... are there REALLY male escorts that service gals only?

Trix, Sorry you waited so long to find out.."American Gigolo" isn't a Gay Movie! There was a storyline going on, but not about Guys doing Guys. It was just about a Guy having to do Guys, under pressure.. At the time, it was a little insight into the "Working Guys" for Women.

Personally I think the Internet has Unemployed alot of Madames, since then!

Yes, there are Men who will "Only Service Women".. I think they call them Straight Guys! LOL :+

Dear Trix,

Thanks for mentioning this movie. Actually it changed my life in ways that I never imagined... (And even before watching it!)

When I was about six or seven years old, I was at a family reunion and I overheard my parents telling our relatives that they had just rented American Gigolo. (Remember those smaller Beta videocassetes?) I have always had an inquisitive mind and have always hated to hear words that I don't understand. So I approached the adult croud and with my odd, raspy voice candidly asked:

"Mom, what's a gigolo?" :o :o :o

Aunt Margarita shrieked. Aunt Rosa gasped for air and then in a whisper asked for the "salts" and all the men sat straighter on their chairs.

My mom, firm believer that children deserved knowing the truth, thought about it for a second and with absolute ellegance responded smiling:

"A gigolo is a gentleman whose job is to provide pleasure, companionship and fun to people who are in need of that."

The room relaxed inmediately.

I saw the men patting each other on their backs, the ladies recovered the colour on their cheeks and my mother kept on telling the story.

After a moment of considerating the subject, (It did take me a while to digest such concept), I asked in mild disbelief:

"And they get paid for doing that?"

By now, the adults thought we children understood nothing. It was a harmless subject after all. Uncle Jose smilingly announced:

"And they get paid very well, my son."

They all laughed and celebrated the fact that -after all- children are just children. And they kept going on with their conversation, until i finally said, almost for myself:

"Wow! That is really cool... That's what I want to do when I grow up."

Absolute silence.

Gasps.

Salts.

Straight spines sitting sternly.

My mother, always so wise and composed just smiled again, breathed deeply and with an affectionate pat on my head said:

"We will talk about that when you grow up."

Isn't it funny how one at weird moments discovers one's vocations and different callings in life?

Sure, when I grew up I saw the movie (that I always since then yearned to see) and was a bit dissapointed. But the more I found about about the gigolo concept, the more I found it exciting, alluring, misterious... fun. And I still find it a loving profesion. Providing pleasure, companionship and fun to people who need it. And don't we all need that?

I can predict that some here will crucify my poor mom, or will say that it is funny how I try to romanticyze my work and blah, blah, blah. I just wanted to share this moment with you guys. I think it is rather funny.

Let the companionship, pleasure and fun be prodigallly provided!

That's a great story, Juan, and well-told! But, just so that I have a clear scenario in my mind, would you say your odd, raspy voice was Harvey Fierstein odd & raspy, or Kathleen Turner odd & raspy?

They set two very different moods, you know.
