A bit after the horse has bolted, but in this case, to help him best might have been arranging a session so he could earn some cash. You wouldn't need to tell him (and it would be better if you didn't) that you knew he had trouble. If it was outside of your schedule you could tell him "I just decided I wanted an extra". He would have been overjoyed at the windfall, you would have helped, and he would never have known you knew he was facing court.
