She has some idea that it is more likely that she will get a communicable disease, including HIV, if she has sex with a guy who also does male porn. Who cares what she does? Less work for her I guess. I am not sure if scientifically that is correct but it doesn't make much difference because I am only going to have sex with a guy.

And it is not homophobic. She is not saying that she will discriminate against gay men. She is saying that she will refuse to have sex with a straight/bi man who has sex with a gay man. It is her right to do so. Straight men don't have an inherent right to have sex and get paid for it with whomever they please. What if she said I simply won't have sex with someone with blond hair? Is that blond-phobic? No, that is her choice. Blond men don't have a right to have sex with her.

It probably is correct if she doesn't use condoms in scenes (pretty typical because condom usage can be painful over the long periods of fucking required to make porn), he's versatile and doesn't consistently use Truvada or condoms (something no one else can verify).

No, but I bet if she refused to have sex with black men you would probably have no problem calling her a racist.

I actually do think it's homophobic -- especially with her comment that she doesn't know what they do in their private lives -- but I doubt the crossover male models give a shit since they get paid more to do gay porn. At the very least it demonstrates a lot of ignorance about disease transmission. You would think someone in the sex industry would stay up on the science. And don't they do pre-shoot testing in straight porn the same as gay porn?

They do. But it's not completely infallible; there's still a lag, and that lag is when someone who has recently seroconverted is going to have a high viral load.

Not being able to monitor what someone does outside of porn is a risk factor. That includes monitoring their risk reduction practices (Truvada, condom usage).

Just an FYI: https://www.xbiz.com/news/232192/adult-star-august-ames-passes-away

At this time nothing has been confirmed with several conflicting reports. Supposedly Ventura County ME confirms it while others state they have been in contact with her as of an hour ago. But something to keep in mind when discussing this topic further as this debate originally started with this individual.

That is very sad. She was only 23.

This is awful. August was trashed and bullied for expressing her sexual preference/choice in her porn career. She committed suicide. Those who attacked her are lower than human excrement.

I'm so sorry, August, that sexual liberty was not extended to you too. RIP beautiful lady.

Something that has always baffled me and I noticed once again over the past few days is:

  1. Why PrEP is not advocated or even suggested for preventing HIV on the straight side of the porn industry? and
  2. Why are performers' knowledge when it comes to sexual health so lacking and non-existent?

Comments coming from several performers on the straight side of the porn industry mimicked knowledge that hasn't evolved past the 80s. Maybe an organization should be formed that helps educate performers throughout the entire industry.

I would hope the performers's physicians are telling them to go on it, but lots of porn performers probably don't even carry health insurance. Most of them aren't earning the kind of money that could pay for it out of pocket, and the industry doesn't want to spend the money themselves. I would think it's not nearly as high-margin as it used to be.

Considering Gilead has a co-pay program and an assistant program that takes less than 60 seconds to signup for, there's no reason any individual should have to pay a single cent for Truvada.

Not everyone is eligible for these programs. My own sister has MS and was not able to take advantage of the copay assistance program for her MS drugs because her insurance coverage was somehow deemed inadequate. So she went to a nursing home and went on Medicaid.

Not everyone wants to deal with Truvada’s side effects. Some prefer to manage their risk in other ways, as imperfect as they may be.

Kurtis, the text below is from the link you posted. Upset stomach is a problem for many people, whether it disappears or not. And the rarer side effect, decrease in bone density, is especially problematic for women. I can understand some women not wanting to take the risk of being in that group.

You may disagree with this woman's choice not to do scenes with MM performers, but I don't think it's fair to attribute a refusal to take Truvada to lack of education.

Most side effects, like headache or nausea, usually go away when you get used to the medication.

However, there are two potential long-term effects that may be of concern: kidney function and bone density. Elevated creatinine function happens in about 2% of people who use PrEP. The guidelines for taking PrEP properly include checking your kidney function every 3-6 months at those quarterly visits with your medical provider.

Bone density loss is another concern, but it is also rare and not considered serious. Again, this is something to discuss with your doctor.

Feel free to contribute to a thoughtful debate but don't throw misinformed opinions and obviously false information into the mix just to up your post count on this board

My post consisted of the text of an FB post that you had linked to here and a comment that the specific side effect discussed in that post is especially problematic for women. Which part is incorrect?

I did not nor do I disagree with any performer's right to refuse to work another performer. DO NOT insinuate or state my viewpoints because of your own mis-information and reading between the lines. You are no better than the individuals who were telling this young woman to go kill herself. I also did not state this performer refused to take Truvada as PrEP. Keep in mind most of the straight porn industry does not know about Truvada as PrEP. In fact, I just recently asked about this very fact with a lot of representatives and performers participating on the Xbiz forums and most do not know anything about it and the few that do are citing studies from 2012, before Truvada was even available for PrEP. CLEARLY that is a lack of education and information in the industry.

My problem with this performer's refusal to work with cross-over performers is her specific reason. If she did not state her reason for doing so, there would have been no issue what-so-ever. UNDERSTAND THAT FACT.

We agree that it was a bad move to publicly state her reason for rejecting certain scene partners. But I disagree that stating that makes her a bigot.

Keep in mind most of the straight porn industry does not know about Truvada as PrEP"

You may be right, but it's an open question whether the people posting publicly on the Xbiz forums are representative of the industry as a whole.

There are side-effects with anything you put into your body. These side-effects are minimal when compared to most things we put inside our bodies. Considering the minimal side-effects with Truvada, it has been stated by several scientists that Truvada is as safe if not safer than Aspirin.

A study was just released just recently stating hormonal birth control which most of these female performers use causes an increase in breast cancer. That's a pretty significant side-effect if you were to ask me.

That's true, but hormonal BCP also decreases the risk of ovarian cancer. Some women decide that the benefits are worth the risks, while others choose a different form of contraception, like the sponge or a diaphragm.

As for the argument that everything has side effects: It's reasonable for people to evaluate each medication based by comparing benefits to risks. Moreover, as with all relatively new drugs, Truvada's risk profile will become clearer over the next decade.

The part where you claim "I don't think it's fair to attribute a refusal to take Truvada to lack of education". DO NOT form viewpoints for me and spin it like it is actually my viewpoint. Leave that bullshit at the door.

Your post suggested that the education you propose for straight porn actors relates, at least in part, to Truvada. But yes, I agree that it's best to end this conversation.

You also are making the assumption that performers in the majority have up-to-date knowledge about sexual health. Several of the performers from the straight porn industry during this heated and uncivil discussion stated that men who did not have sex with other men could not carry and transmit AIDS ( and yes, they said AIDS, not HIV ). Several going as far as stating bacterial infections ( chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis ) in men who have had sex with other men presently or in the past are significantly worse and are difficult to impossible to treat if transmitted to someone else. There were other performers even stating that men who performed in gay porn are a guaranteed death wish even if they consistently test negative for anything.

I’ve did not make that assumption; in fact, I said that you may be right that straight porn actors know less about prep, although we can’t say for sure on the basis of a single online forum. I did say that, while Truvada may be a useful tool, it is reasonable to forego taking it and manage risk (perhaps less effectively) in other ways.

As for the performer who said that people transmit AIDS instead of HIV, it’s possible that he misspoke. In general, though, I agree that many Millennials, in the porn industry or not, could benefit from education about HIV.

I would agree with @Kurtis Wolfe that a lot of people in the porn industry are operating off information that doesn't have a lot of scientific backing for it - which makes sense when your job is one where the specter of HIV infection looms as a life, community and employment changing prospect, especially for the straight side. The part that is frustrating about that all is the protocols for testing are extremely rigorous to the point that there have been really only a handful of cases of HIV transmitted on set since 2004, however thanks to the fearmongering of organizations like AIDS Healthcare Foundation, who is making it their personal mission from god to end the scourge of bareback porn, straight porn performers are still very freaked out.

I think its incredibly sad that Ames passed away, twitter fights are often people wanting to be right more than wanting to teach and a lot of unnecessary showboating took place. That doesn't mean there isn't a place for teaching though, the initial point that performers should challenge their "I won't have sex with crossover performers/black guys/trans women/etc" framework is important, because it doesn't just effect them - it also effects other peoples ability to get work or be out based on parts of themselves that don't actually impinge on someone else's risk. You don't get HIV because you have gay sex or are a trans woman or are black, you get HIV because you have unprotected sex with someone who is HIV positive with transmissible viral load. Inability to understand that basic fact is what puts people at risk because they don't have the right information, and it enforces stigma

Strange exchange on this thread.

If the story is true, and that's a big if these days, it's truly sad that a 23-year-old could not step away from all electronic devices and ignore cyber bullying. Suicide over something so entirely meaningless is a waste I can't fathom. But then again, I have no idea what it's like to be a 23-year-old who works in the porn industry.

If I was an aspiring porn star, I have a feeling I'd be picky about my scene partners, and I'd want to do everything I could to make sure my partner met a certain standard of proven good health. I hear some studios bust their ass for safety. Others, not so much. Porn is a risky business, probably because a lot of people prefer to remain uninformed about health and safety.
