Just last month I had a patient who is visiting the US illegally. He had a major cerebral hemorrhage and he looked for all the world like the best he could hope for was like in a vegetative state. But at 26, his body and brain had other ideas and after almost two weeks in a coma, he began to respond. Slowly he stated moving all his limbs and talking in both English and Spanish. He was taken off all mechanical devices and he continued to improve. Eventually the tracheostomy came out and the feeding tube through the abdomen to the stomach was closed off. He was able to breath on his own and swallow and eat. I asked him what he wanted to eat and he said "Tacos" Wheat or corn, I asked and he said he want carnitas de maize, beef on corn tacos. We went out to a local restaurant and got him his order and since then he was making amazing progress. Today he went home. Fitting to find out it is Taco day. He could be the poster boy. Just a shame that as soon as he left the hospital, he was not longer eligible for any kind of government assistance. Fortunately he has a big extended family and many helping hands. He told me that he knows he is getting back to where he was and beyond. Though medically this is a long shot, I am betting on him.

Feliz dia del taco Jesus.

Beautiful story, what a will to live he had! I'm sure his family will take good care of him.
