There's a wonderful new independent film "Mysterious Skin" now playing in very limited release. (In New York City it's being shown only at the Film Forum.) NY Times critic AO Scott says it's one of the best movies he's seen this year. The story focuses on two teenagers, one of whom is a gay hustler portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (originally seen as the boy alien on "Third Rock From The Sun"). Entertainment Weekly Magazine characterizes his performance as remarkable. By all means, try to see this movie if it's playing in your area.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt played a homophobic straight Mormon missionary in Latter-Days. (He originally tested for the part of the gay missionary in that movie.)

Definately want to see him in this role. Thanks for the info.

J G-L also did an off-Broadway show where he played the homophobic nephew. He seems interested in these things....

In Mysterious Skin, the guy who played the pedophile was particularly good. At the showing I went to, director Greg Araki was meeting the fans...maybe he should take on an acting role himself.

If you enjoyed "Mysterious Skin," you should check out Gregg Araki's Teenage Apocolypse Trilogy: "The Living End," "The Doom Generation," and "Nowhere." They're very different but equally enjoyable.

I just came across a small article in yesterday's NY Daily News about Joseph Gordon-Levitt which calls his performance in "Mysterious Skin" astonishing. The article refers to him as the next Johnny Depp in the way he picks quirky roles in small, smart projects. He'll next be seen in "Brick", supposedly a high school film noir and apparently a big favorite at this year's Sundance Festival.

Greg Araki

Actually, the very early Greg Araki movies are very "LA." I am surprised Rod has not popped up and offered his take on all this. Mysterious Skin is well done and I also enjoyed many of the earlier Araki movies, but for anyone who has not seen other movies, basing an opinion on the earlier movies from this would not be comparable.
