THE NEW YORK CITY PIERS

http://i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/218857/slide_218857_843458_free.jpg

From dangerousminds.net: A series of decaying wood and steel structures extending into the Hudson River along the West Side Highway from Christopher Street up to Chelsea, the New York City piers were a popular cruising spot in the 1970s. The years between Stonewall and the advent of AIDS were a period of sexual freedom and celebration in the West Village and the piers were at the center of a scene that, in retrospect, seems bittersweet.

Nelson Sullivan’s “The Piers in New York City in 1976” is a two-and-a-half minute 8mm clip of a transitional time between hope and harsher realities.

Until his fatal heart attack in 1987, Sullivan spent much of his time documenting the Manhattan downtown scene of the 1970s and 80s.

From http://www.gaycities.com: In June 1993, the Estate of Leonard Fink donated a photographic collection to The Center in New York City through its executor, Steven E. Bing. The materials in the Fink Estate was willed to four AIDS organizations who gave all of the rights to the photos to the Center Archive. Some of these were signed “Len Elliot,” which may have been a pseudonym of Fink’s. The collection consists of over 25,000 negatives and images capturing Greenwich Village and much of the spirit of the late '60s and '70s. Some of the most well known images in the collection are Fink’s work at The Piers along the Hudson River.

Fink documented over 25 years of gay life in New York City, but his photography was never exhibited or published in his lifetime. He was self taught and used an old 35mm camera while working out of a homemade darkroom in his West 92nd Street apartment.

From homohistory.com: Sex on the Piers, NYC circa the 1960s, 70s and 80s The urban decay of mid-century New York provided gay men with a place to sunbathe nude in the heart of Manhattan, and an opportunity for sexual exploration. The Gay Liberation Movement had awakened a generation of gay men, many of whom had felt isolated and oppressed. The piers became their playground. Abandoned for decades, the piers along the elevated West Side Highway became part of the Christopher Street gay scene when men began wandering a few blocks over to the dark and seedy area to cruise. It could be a dangerous place. Several men fell to their deaths through the rotting floors, and there was always the threat of being robbed by addicts, attacked by gay bashers or arrested by the NYPD.
