British-born Larry Burrows (1926-1971) made his name during the Vietnam War. Having already covered military operations in Lebanon, Iraq, Congo and Cyprus, he went to Vietnam in 1962 and remained there until his death in 1971. Working for LIFE magazine, documenting the escalating conflict, the deepening US involvement and the suffering of the ordinary Vietnamese, his work may be the single best archive of a war that ravaged a generation and defined American politics in the 1960s and 70s.

He was killed at age 44, along with photojournalists Henri Huet, Kent Potter and Keisaburo Shimamoto, when their helicopter was shot down over Laos.

In 2002, Burrows' posthumous book Vietnam was awarded the Prix Nadar.

In 2008, the scant remains of Burrows, Huet, Potter and Shimamoto were interred at the Newseum in Washington DC.

Reaching Out, 1966

In October 1966, on a mud-splattered hill just south of the Demilitarized Zone in Vietnam, LIFE magazine's Larry Burrows made a photograph that, for generations, has served as the most indelible, searing illustration of the horrors inherent in that divisive war — and, by implication, in all wars. Commonly known as Reaching Out, the image is of an injured Marine — Gunnery Sgt. Jeremiah Purdie, a blood-stained bandage on his head — drawn to a stricken comrade. In one frame, we see tenderness and terror, desolation and fellowship, and encounter the power of a simple human gesture to transform an inhuman landscape.

Charles C. Ebbets

http://www.elafter.com/usuarios/up/666_deathmetal_666/img/imagenes%20historicas%20breves%20historias%20(14).jpg

Born in Gadsden, Alabama, Charles C. Ebbets (1905 - 1978) bought his first camera at age eight by charging it to his mother's account at a local drugstore. He started his career during the 1920s in St. Petersburg, Florida, as a still photographer, and eventually became involved in motion pictures, both in front of and behind the camera. He had a brief stint as an actor, and was also a pilot, a wing-walker, an auto racer, a wrestler and a hunter. He was prizefighter Jack Dempsey's official staff photographer, a staff photographer for the Miami Daily News and a freelance photographer.

Ebbets' two most famous photos were taken during the construction of Rockefeller Center in New York in 1932. Lunchtime atop a Skyscraper depicts eleven men sitting on a girder eating lunch, their feet dangling from the beams hundreds of feet above the New York streets. It was snapped on September 29, 1932, and appeared in the New York Herald Tribune shortly after. The photo was taken on the 69th floor in the last months of construction. Men Asleep on a Girder is a picture of the same workers lying down on the beam taking a nap.

Not until 2003 was Ebbets officially recognized by the Bettman Archive as the photographer of Lunchtime atop a Skyscraper and dozens of other famous Bettman Archive photos which had previously been mismarked or marked as "photographer unknown."

Jake Deckard and Bronson Gates on the third photo; hot, hairy men!

Amen to that. I had a big pang! of envy (yeah, that's a metaphor) when I learned that a friend from the Forum had been with Jake. He wouldn't be the "cup of tea" for guys who love twinks and pretty boys, but what he's got -- that rough masculinity with a confident attitude -- works big time for me.

I've had a crush on him for years and years; I just like his look--sort of like the "I'm not taking any of this very seriously" look ; I had a massage with him in LA a couple of years ago; it was a good massage but he was playful too; much fun and I'd schedule another if the opportunity presented itself!

James Dean and Dennis Stock

In 1951, Dennis Stock (1928-2010) won a first prize in a Life magazine competition for young photographers. That same year, he became an associate member of the photography agency Magnum, becoming a full partner-member in 1954.

Stock met actor James Dean in 1955, a few months before the latter's sudden death. He undertook a series of photos of Dean, one of which -- taken in New York's Times Square -- became an iconic image of the young star. The black and white picture shows Dean with a pulled up collar, a cigarette in his mouth, on a rain-soaked day. It became one of the most reproduced photographs of the post-war period.

From 1957 until the early 1960s, Stock aimed his lens at jazz musicians. In the 1970s and 1980s he concentrated on color photography of nature and landscape, returning to his urban roots in the 1990s to focus on architecture and modernism.

Robert Pattinson portrayed Dennis Stock in the biographical drama film Life (2015) about Stock's friendship with James Dean.
