In a similar genre this young man attracted my attention, later in my life. Another tragic early death of a talented (and attractive) young actor, Brandon De Wilde

James Dean and Brando presented a self-aware, male sexuality that leapt off the movie screen. Yowza! It was like they had constant hard ons and one hand in a pocket at all times. My sister and I were in love with both of them and Montgomery Clift, too. Gorgeous, masculine and troubled. Irresistible!

Yes! And while Dean admitted to his Homo - SITUAL side (gay friendly when it was helpful to him) only in private and was basically a str8 man, Brando was very open about his actual homo feelings for another talented man (who today we'd consider a nerd :). Though he pre-deceased Brando by decades, believe was in Brando's will his ashes be placed with his.

Dean was more than HomoSituational -- We was well known in the Hollywood Gay/Leather Scene as a Human Ashtray

You can read all about that in the same place as the Richard Gere gerbal story and Rock Hudson's wedding to Jim Nabors. Sorry, those who knew him best and longest admit to many unflattering aspects of his life, like letting older men blow him in echange for and sometimes as just a thank you for career help, but ALL say that Gay S/M cigarette thang is just BS. His closest friend and roomie believes a drunken party where he did it to himself on his arm to form some design that he showed people was prolly the "birth" of this urban legend. He liked women, dated and slept with women, fell in love with a women, and was just "gay friendly" like a lot of str8 struggling actors etc are today. His best friend asked him why he let some producer who'd helped him blow him and he said - because he wanted it so much. ;)

So your book is better than my book is the basis of your argument --- Gotcha --

Before the '70s (when folks like Sal Mineo "came out"), so many people kept their sexual habits behind closed doors. Therefore, it is impossible to determine the full truth about so many actors and celebrities. For one thing, people were always enjoying themselves with their own gender for centuries and merely not discussing it. The 19th century, in particular, was one in which you could get away with anything even though the Oscar Wilde trial did close the lid on a lot of activities being made public. What was interesting about the "pansy" paranoia of the 1920s and early '30s was that the conservatives were more upset with all of the men behaving "effeminate" in public, but really could care less what was going on in private. There was also a LOT of sexual experimentation during the two world wars, simply because the genders were often kept apart (men only in the military, women in factories at the home-front) but there was still a need to "get off" regardless. This is why the Kinsey reports conducted in the 1940s made it so obvious that very few were 100% heterosexual (and few 100% homosexual, for that matter) and a vast majority was somewhere in-between.

Later on, statistics on sex changed with Masters & Johnson trying to "heteronormalize" sex in their studies, even considering homosexuality a dysfunction of sorts that could potentially be corrected with therapy (although they too changed their logic like everybody else by the '70s). Their work was done in more repressive times, however. Eisenhower and McCarthy were legalizing the great Lavender Scare, resulting in the firing of many "deviants" from federal positions by 1953 for fear they may be subject to blackmail in those neurotic Cold War times. (Never mind the fact that McCarthy's henchman, Roy Cohn was rather questionable, as was J. Edgar Hoover as well.) This was the era when "being in the closet" was at its peak. Not that it was ever legal in many states prior to the 1980s and '90s anyway.

James Dean was officially a star in 1954 when you simply did NOT discuss these things. Rock Hudson married Phyllis Gates the following year. By then even he had to put on a front. Elizabeth Taylor did give some "hints hints" about both her co-stars in Giant but only gave confirmation of the latter. Problem according to Liz was that Dean was very moody and only socialized when he wanted to, while Hudson was more open with friends (like Liz) despite his agent and the studios keeping his sex life secret.

There have been several rumors suggesting that James Dean and Paul Newman were sexual together when they were at the Actors Studio in New York, pre-Hollywood. There is much debate about that one, but their screen test for East of Eden (with Paul not being cast) has been played endlessly over the years with much snickering because they are so blatant about their bromance.

Think of the gorgeous child that coupling would have produced.

I remember reading about his death in the paper when I was a child. When he died, only one of his films was playing in theaters, probably "East of Eden."

Back around 2000 they still had the shop on Vine that Dean used before taking his fateful trip to Salinas. Kind of cool since it was so run down and yet part of history in a way. Sometimes I would find myself tracing that day myself. Of coarse I was going that way anyways. There are still fans that make the pilgrimage to Indiana to visit his grave. Peoples obsession with Dean I don't get. People treat him like a god.

OK Correction on my part. That movie was filmed in 1954, but released in March 1955. I think it was the only premiere he saw, since Rebel's wide released missed his death by a month (although there could have been a preview) and Giant a year later. When I meant star, I probably meant he was taking the lead of a major Warner Bros. feature.

Not familiar to me but I'm sure I've driven by it many times now. I guess the florist shop was used in 6 feet under.

That Porsche spider looks like a toy car or in my mind a death trap. You crash in something like that and you die.

Another fascinating post by Tonyko. Thank you. BTW. The gas station, now gone, is in Sherman Oaks at the corner of Ventura Blvd and Beverly Glen. The florist shop is still there. Across the street is Casa de Cadillac. The photo with Dean in it is looking east down Ventura blvd.

I used to live a few blocks from there. Casa de Cadillac owns the corner, which is actually a triangle. When I was doing real estate, I tried to put together a development deal which included the car wash, the florist shop and the Cadillac dealership. I never knew that Dean had stopped there on that fateful day. I think all of this is just fascinating.

Noooo lol. Just "different". As in non-fiction

Well TonTon years ago - I met and spoke with Grandpa Walton several times - Actor Will Geer was a well known leather queen, and he was out at the Mineshaft in Miami - He was in leather with a cigar and a boy 1/3 his age on a leash.

In the course of the conversation he talked about having used JD as an ashtray himself - and what a beautiful tormented boi JD had been. In years past I have seen the occasional pic of Geer in Gear online.

Well as FATES would have it oddly enough I interviewed some founding members of The Mattachine in my 20's who oddly mentioned that Will (while acknowledging his tenacious attitude in those early lib days, ALSO said that he had to be gagged (no pun) and chastized a lot for making things up that never happened to bolster the fight for rights etc. (I ONLY remember this so well because it was the first time I'd become aware that grampa was gay lol) So, again, I remain TRES skeptical
