my Brazil visa, valid to 2022, is securely attached in my soon-to-expire passport.....sending in my renewal soon and wondering if they pull it out of the old one and put it in the new or if they'll return my old one and I carry both....quick googling about this seems to only lead to answers for those with US visas (non US citizens).....

and what is a passport card I see mentioned?.....necessary?....primary use?.....

thanks a lot

I think you just need to call them and ask about the visa. 1-877-487-2778

Passport cards are not good for international air travel.

The passport card is only valid for entry to the US at land based border crossings and sea ports of entry when traveling from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda

I believe you carry both old passport (with valid visa) and new US passport with you.

If you’re talking about the US Passport Card that is not necessary and, actually, not of any real use to you when traveling to Brazil. It only acts as a passport substitute for Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda when traveling by land or sea. It is not useful for air travel outside the US. However it would work for domestic air travel and could be useful if you reside in one of those states where their driver’s license doesn’t meet the “Real ID” requirements of the TSA. Those state licenses will no longer be accepted by TSA after January 2018.

I've used my passport card to and from Mexico (at land crossings). It's maybe a little more convenient than using your passport. I guess it also gives you a back up ID. (If your passport gets stolen in Mexico, you can still use your card). I've never tried using it for the TSA domestically but it seems like a good idea as backup or primary ID.

Just renewed (last month) my expiring US Passport with still good for many years Brazil Visa in it. New US Passport arrived without Brazil Visa in it and, a few days later, the old passport came in the mail (with the usual holes punched in it which, I guess, is the flag indicating it has been renewed). If I were return to Brazil, I would carry both but would likely contact the nearest Brazilian Consulate to verify their requirements before leaving home.

The usual international practice is to carry the expired passport with the valid visa TOGETHER with the valid passport which has no visa. It works for most --if not all-- countries, and I am quite sure that it includes Brazil. Otherwise, why would they issue you a visa which is valid longer than your passport?

Don't forget to ALWAYS email yourself with a copy of the passport, visa if necessary.

That way when away if you lose or have it stolen you can cut thru paperwork at a consulate to get a new one or at least be able to get home with as little disruption as possible.
