A 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit New Zealand's South Island early Monday morning, with reports of aftershocks. It hit some 96km (59 miles) from Christchurch, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

People are still trapped in Kaikoura (a well known base for whale watching) with road and rail north and south blocked by landslides. Ships and helicopters from the Navies of New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the US, Japan and Singapore are on their way there to evacuate townspeople and tourists. Many of the ships were there for a fleet review in Auckland to mark the 75th Anniversary of the RNZN.
