I believe you are right about Rheingold, which is why I always watched it from standing room at the the Met, so I could sneak out to the men's room if I had to.

Question. Obviously you were able to sneak out, but would they let you back in. Once I had a seat on the aisle in the family circle for Don Carlo. I ran to the bathroom just before the final scene. When I tried to get in the usher stopped me as I heard the orchestral introduction to "Tu che le vanità". However, when when he was off his guard I opened the door and ran to my seat.

Sometimes I could get back in if I were in the Family Circle standing room. It was more difficult at the back of the Orchestra.
