Holy smokes, Celeste Guap (pronounced Goo-Op) is going to be a very rich former prostitute ("sex worker" per QTR).

The California teenage prostitute who allegedly traded sex with Oakland cops for protection is suing the city for a whopping $66 million, claiming force members treated her as a sex slave.

Celeste Guap, a pseudonym used by the 19-year-old, said she slept with dozens of Oakland officers when she was just 17 years old and working as a prostitute — because they gave her tips on how to avoid raids.

A new lawsuit filed against the city of Oakland Friday claimed the sex scandal — in which seven officers face criminal charges including sex crimes and failure to report sexual misconduct — was an act of “modern day slavery” against the teenager, whose real name is Jasmine.

Um, Jasmine is not the gold-digger your post title suggests she is, and what the Oakland police officers involved did is not much different from what the Oklahoma City police officer whose name I have thankfully repressed who was convicted of raping women he interacted with in his role as a police officer did that got him convicted and kicked off the force.

Ironically, I just deleted a link to a months-old article about this travesty not that long ago because it was too untimely. Now I'm sorry I did.

(The use of the loaded terms prostitute and hooker instead of sex worker, or female sex worker if you must, also bugs me.)

At first I thought it was a thread about Melania...

"The California teenage prostitute", please feel free to write the NYDailyNews!

As you noticed, you used it in the text you wrote.

Thank you for the nod in the right direction. I'd still say the title of the thread is sensationalist and misleading.

(This word usage largely bugs me because no one here other than Steven Kesslar calls male escorts anything other than escorts, but female sex workers are usually referred to as prostitutes or hookers. I fail to see a principled distinction.)

Well, those cops should be spending a looong time in the state prison system, and only out as permanent registered sex offenders. That being said, $66 million is outrageous, too. Her attorney should be disbarred and sent to the state prison as well.

+1.

As for the rest, the trier of fact (jury or judge if jury trial is waived) gets to decide damages irrespective of what's in the complaint. Or, more likely, the city or its insurance carrier in a negotiated settlement, seeing as the city is clearly on the hook for something. (Age of consent in California is 18, so at least some of the sexual acts constituted statutory rape.)

You have strongly felt, strongly worded and strongly expressed opinions about the legal system that are pretty much never an accurate depiction of how it actually works. I'm so sorry the legal system has not been designed to your satisfaction, but the amount of damages requested in a tort case is not ever going to be the basis for a license suspension or disbarment. For one thing, there's always the possibility of punitive damages.

Her attorney is simply doing his or her job.
