It seems Julian Assange has endangered the very closeted and very underground gay community in Saudi Arabia. Punishable by death there, this is a serious endangerment issue the world over. People should be able to control their own lives with respect to sexuality and sexual practices. For any of you computer geeks out there, how do we protect ourselves in the hiring community? Could it happen to us?

Hunh?

Gman

There's a thread called "Life's Annoyances," which describes the atrocities one experienced when attempting to mail a package to Switzerland. It would seem that waiting in line at the postal service pales in comparison to being outed by Wikileaks.

I thought it was pretty atrocious. There's something to be said for transparency in government, but transparency in one's private life should only come as a choice and at a time of your own choosing. Definitely disappointed in this dude. It's a wake-up-call for how easily our lives can be encroached upon by outsiders.

I have never understood how or why anyone has ever viewed Julian Assange as a hero, pioneer, or anything positive. This latest occurrence only confirms my view of him. He is only in this for himself and the attention it brings him.

Publishing Chelsea Manning's revelations of the crimes of the American military was courageous and important. Most everything else has been despicable.

I would be willing to contribute money to help defray the cost of keeping the asshole locked up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. His confinement there has got to uncomfortable and miserable - it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Salute the Brits they won't even allow him passage to the airport in order to travel to live freely in Ecuador.

I would agree that Chelsea Manning was courageous and made an important contribution (via WikiLeaks, which Assange founded), but Assange has always strongly distanced himself from actual involvement in Manning's revelations.

Julian Assange sought, and was granted, asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London after he lost his final appeal, in British Courts, to avoid deportation to Sweden to face rape charges. His defense was that the charges were trumped up and part of a conspiracy on the part of the United States to bring him to the U.S. to face charges because of his part in the Wikileaks.

His appeal for asylum was granted directly by the President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa. Although he received his PhD in Economics from the University of Illinois Correa was not on amicable terms with the U.S. government of George Busch nor currently with that of Barak Obama. He styles himself a democratic socialist, however, the Economists magazine calls him a “left-wing populist: He allied himself, for years, with Hugo Chavez in Venezuela and Evo Morales in Bolivia. Both Venezuela and Bolivia are currently on the brink of economic disaster. Correa was able to write off 60% of Ecuador’s foreign debt and invest that money saved in poverty programs and infrastructure. He is extremely popular in Ecuador and derives pleasure from tweaking the nose of the U.S. a good example of which is the granting of Assange sanctuary.
