My impression has been that flossing is more important for gum health and periodontal health than cavity prevention. I'm a bit of a fanatic about flossing - 2x/day almost always. I hate having food stuck between my teeth, so I occasionally floss even 3 times in a day. Of course I brush thoroughly twice a day also. I also clean my tongue 2x/day. I accumulate tartar quicker than most, so I get my teeth cleaned every 4 months rather than the usual six months.

The results speak for themselves. I think I have needed one filling in the last 25 years. When the hygienist checks periodontal pockets, the depths are all 1s and 2s. It is extremely rare that I ever have any kind of gum irritation, bleeding, etc.

I'll keep flossing. The only downside I can see is the price of dental floss.

The only time I ever floss is the day or 2 before and after I visit my dentist.... Otherwise never.... In spite of that, I seem to have a healthy mouth and pretty teeth, so perhaps the new findings are onto something ?

Too bad the Times didn't mention the smell of unflossed teeth.

Right - If anybody needed a reason to floss - that would be it. . . a sure fire way to eliminate bad breath.

This post and its implications are the grossest thing I have read in this forum... and we have posted pretty fucked up stuff.

I do not care whether flossing will prevent cavities or whether it will turn you into an alien. Read this carefully. Paint it with red letters on your bedroom's wall, repeat it to yourself before going to sleep and every day when waking up:

Dude, if you want to kiss, you gotta floss.

Not only once before seeing a lover. That will not get rid of the nasty fetid bacteria hiding between your teeth. Every day. And then brush carefully and correctly. (Yes, there is a correct way and MOST people brush incorrectly, google it). Then mouthwash.

Most people with horrible breath have absolutely no idea they have horrible breath. Friends won't tell them, lover's won't tell them and most escorts will suffer through it. Do you really want people to dread having to deal with you? Do you really want people to brace themselves before having to even talk to you?

Always come from the certainty that you have horrifying breath and apply the necessary dental hygiene and diet to correct that. Go to the dentist and get cavities and rotten teeth dealt with.

If you do this, I assure you, you will find people kiss you with gusto.

Isn't that what most men in here say, that they want their lover to enjoy himself? Well, there is a way. It's called due diligence.

We need the opinion of @whipped guy.

Well I have not stopped or cut back on my flossing! If anything this is proof that it is important to floss correctly! Most people who floss simply don't do it properly. Therefore, if you compare those who don't floss to those who do but are not doing it correctly the results are going to show not much in the way of benefits.

I can attest to two things after a lifetime of experience:

1. Those who don't floss or don't so it consistently or properly usually end up getting into trouble.

2. Those who floss properly and consistently usually are better able to beat the odds.

Nothing is ever sure in life as the old saying goes, but it's best to play safe rather than end up being sorry.

I am also a firm believer in rinsing with Listerine or even better it's generic equivalent at a fraction of the price as an adjunct to flossing. (Hint if a mouthwash is labeled Antiseptic and has the ADA seal of approval it's the equivalent of higher priced Listerine.) Pick your favorite flavor and you're good to go. I am partial to the green variety!

Some are worried about the 21.6% alcohol content in Listerine. Usually these are the same folks who sip a scotch (40% and higher +++ ) on the rocks and are not overly concerned about that...
