Channing Tatum will be reprising the roll Daryl Hannah made famous in SPLASH, playing the Merman who saves and falls in Love with a mortal, played by Jillian Bell...

It will be produced by Disney

Are you anxious to see Channing's TAIL ?

Ethel was originally Ethel Zimmermann, but knew her last name was too long and changed it to Ethel Merman. Ethel died several decades ago, but she is well remembered, if mostly for her booming voice.

She wasn't a good singer, just LOUD, but I dont think Channing will be singing, I prefer that he be FLEXING !

You do realize that Merman (and Mary Martin too) performed on Broadway before body mics were invented. People like Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Stephen Sondheim wrote for Merman for many reasons, particularly because her voice was a belt and `her pronunciation was excellent.

The same applies to Mary Martin, with slightly different people: Rodgers and Hammerstein, Kurt Weill, Comden & Green and Cole Porter

I remember an interview with Mel Brooks who remembered her singing so loud that you could here her clearly in the last row of the balcony (where he sat). That was a necessary skill before the days of microphone miniaturazation; today Broadway performers no longer need that "skill." Opera singers are the last holdout of the non-microphone world.

As an FYI, the original, unless memory is totally failing me, was one of the first pictures produced under the Touchstone Pictures label by Disney.

As often with Google images, it sometimes difficult to identify the real Mary Martin and the real Ethel Merman. The photo above is the only time the two ladies performed a concert together on a Broadway stage (1977).

Mary is dressed in her "South Pacific" clothes. Ethel in her "Gypsy" clothes.

Yes, Channing is so dreamy luvu.gifI'll go see it unless the reviews are really bad. But in my fantasies Disney would have Tom Hanks reprise his role from the original: so it would not only be a gay love story between Channing and Tom, it would also be a May-December romance.

This can't be real.

Oh, wait. A search on Google says it is. Oh, brother.
