Heya,

Just wondering if anyone else is going to miss NBC's Tom Brokaw for the evening news? His last broadcast was tonight.

It's funny, but I've just...watched NBC news on and off for years (not every day in other words, but quite a bit), and you get used to these people.

I have no idea where Tom is politically (conservative, liberal, etc.), which is I suppose how it should be for a news anchor, but I deeply respect him and he brought a...humanity...to the news for me, but still kept his impartiality.

I'll stop babbling, but thought I'd see if I was alone. Brian Williams isn't a bad anchor, but it just feels like something's missing with him to me.

P.S. Hope this is okay in the Lounge - didn't really feel it was a Politics/Religion/War topic.

You're not alone, gup.

These guys are in our homes daily. They DO become familiar figures and develop a certain place of trust. Today actually reminds me of the day Walter Cronkite stepped down ... not because of any similar traits between the two but because we lost a daily "familiar thing".

A friend stepped down.

He certainly *isn't* a friend, and I know that. But the feeling is still there. Familiarity is a strange beast.

Not in the oridinary sense will I miss Tom Brokaw. Let's not forget that Mr Brokaw replaced the late John Chancellor on NBC Nightly News. I'm sure there must be some people out there who still miss Mr Chancellor after all these years, even though he stayed within the NBC News Division. Tom made the right decision to leave in the time frame that the he has chosen. In turn NBC created this transition between Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams. In a year from now, will anyone really remember what it was like to watch Tom as the anchorman for NBC Nightly News. Next year CBS News will be saying farewell to Dan Rather. Will anyone be sorry to see him go, only time will tell.

In Tom's final broadcast, I thought it was very nice of him to pay one last tribute to as he once decribed the greatest generation of the 20th century. The generation of WW II. Tom has made his mark on television, he's had a distinguished career. It's easy to forget that Mr Brokaw was once a local fixture on KNBC affiliate station out in Los Angeles, with his long time friend Tom Snyder. He worked his way up the ladder and reached the top. As the old expression goes " All Good Things Must Come To Pass ". It was time for him to say goodbye. With that the Network paid tribute to him by playing Bob Hope's " Thanks For The Memories " to a bunch of old archive clips of Tom in is younger days at the end of Nightly News.

I wont miss seeing Tom on television, due to the fact that he will always find ways to keep his career in journalism in one form or another. I dont think that we've seen the last of Mr Brokaw, I'm sure on the odd occassion he will still do reports on one of the Dateline News Maker Magazines. He'll stick around for a few more years before he officially retires.

I don't watch TV news very often as it's generally superficial and biased towards the political right, as far as I am concerned. That being said, there is no way I could watch Brokaw for at least the past decade. Perhaps it was just me, but his vocal style made him sound constipated. I think he always had that sound, but it came across somewhat differently when he was younger. More recently the image that came to my mind whenever I heard his voice was that of an old man straining on the toilet.

Sorry to be so rude!

Neither do I. As a matter of fact, I am headed over to Time-Warner today to return my cable box, since Derek and I haven't watched broadcast TV in months. The Golden Girls Season One just came out on DVD, so who needs cable? :o
