Do you ALWAYS meet in public first? or do you only do it when you meet someone from backpage?

For me, the first meeting is in public, always, no matter the posting site. Sometimes that public venue is the hotel lobby or bar, but I have never had any problems or felt the need to bail after the initial public meeting. I believe that my insistence of an initial public meeting weeds out any potential flakes or thieves... any idiot knows that every hotel or coffee shop has video surveillance in all of the public spaces.

Also useful to remember the converse point of those of us who like backpage and have used it with success:

Even if you don't want the potential risk, uncertainty, etc. that can come with hiring off backpage, it is good not to overestimate the assurance and certainty that many presume to be a given with the "high-end" sites (today principally rentmen and, in some areas, men4rentnow).

So, the long awaited story of my first experience with backpage.

Texted the guy at 10am because his ad says same day appointments only. He advertises in Ohio for Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Columbus, Sandusky. So my intention is to meet in Columbus in the late afternoon, 5pm, to 10pm.

He says no problem. But I would need to pay half by paypal since he is driving. Now, I don't have money to burn, but Yolo, I'll give it a shot.

I send the money to some Greg Goff guy. All seems good.

Meanwhile, a guy on here has googlad the posted pics. Ithe turns out to be a guy in St Louis named Derrione Hill. Exact. Same. Tats.

At 330, I get a text saying that the traffic is real bad because of the Republican National Convention. And he'll be late.

At 4, he says he has another idea. He'll fly to Columbus. I'm laughing on the inside. But I'm all .... Okay, just let me know your eta. I'd told him I wanted him there from 5 to 10.

The next message is ... I'll be there at 1045.

What??! I'm leaving athe 9am the next morning.

So, I go eat. Watch some Pioneer Woman.

At 1030, he texts me. I say that this was a bad idea, I'm already in bed. His reply .... that's fine. He'll refund my money.

Cut to this morning. He texts me saying that he is in Pittsburgh and that it's my fault.

I tell him I know it isn't him in the pics. I share the Facebook post the real Derrione Hill posted on Thursday of him lifting in St Louis.

The guy calls me saying I'm being a nuisance. I say well, you called me.

Things degrade when I ask him about his pics. He says I'm aggravating him and that he's trying to get home. I hang up.

He calls me back saying that he's not a confrontational person and that he'll refund my money. I bring up the pics again. He gets all defensive.

That's about it. I'm not holding my breath for a refund.

How much did you spend for this aggravation? Also, seems like a waste of time to fly from Cleveland to Columbus. Red flag.

When he said he'd fly, I knew then it was a total scam. But I was having fun.

But perhaps he had a private jet, just like all of the high-end escorts? You can get a gently pre-owned Gulfstream 600 (or G500 if the clients have been a bit too cheap-ass lately) for such a steal these days!

Sympathies. I have had similar disappointments in the human condition off of Rentboy, the only difference being I did not send moolah in advance.

Do not take any broad lessons in disappointment from this. Excelsior!

(But don't pay in advance. No honest guy on first encounter will ask you to.)

Treat this as revealed wisdom. I mean it. Only legit exception would be for someone that you have met before (preferably more than once).

Yes! Once you know and trust a working guy, what I said goes out the window.

The four people I love and trust most in the world today, I met by hiring them.

But the ocean contains more sharks than saints. As in life, apply it proportionally to escorts.

St Augustine signing out for tonight.

I'm not mad or upset about the money. It provided me with some entertainment. And I'm wiser for it. I may try backpage again. There are updates every day.

Last year I had my first and only hire from www.backpage.com. The guy's photos were hot, and I think I made the appointment strictly thru email if my memory serves me correctly. It was an "in" call, and the escort's photos looked like him for the most part. He was cordial and gave me an acceptable time. I think he only advertises when he's in need of some quick $$$'s. ...claimed to be a student in the Stanford University medical program, studying to become a physician's assistant.

[in my writing this, I can see his tall structure, his fairly packed body, his 25 pairs of expensive sports shoes which were neatly stacked, and the 420 Girl Scout Cookies of which I had two puffs and was ready.]

The man could kiss and took directions from me well. If he advertises again at BP, and if we're both "game"-- I want to see him again!

The Adult section has been gone for years. Ads in Men Seeking Men and Casual Encounters - M4M will sometimes contain escort keywords such as seeking "upscale" or "gen" or "generous". I look for the best of the Casual Encounters - M4W and reply with a direct offer of a no-strings blowjob from a guy. Some guys are interested, others express interest while asking if I'm generous.

They also use $ instead of an S.

Yesterday, I had a session with a young guy I hired off BP. Things went very well, and I hope to see him on a regular basis.

I used the same hiring process I would use with Rentmen, or Men4rentnow. I also let my large head do the talking.

End result, WOW!!

The CL m4m casual encounters section can be searched using "help", "in need", "gen", "generous", "college", "massage", "jock", "daddy", "son dad", "younger older". These search terms will yield most of the off-the-grid opportunities.

I've hired off BP about three times in the past year or so. Mama always said hiring off BP was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get. Two out of three hires were true to their pics. It's funny b/c the one who was fake actually looked BETTER than the pics and was GREAT in the sack. The second guy was twinkish and not very enthusiastic - nothing worse than some young queen laying back and waiting for you to do all the work. The third guy was in ATL a couple of weeks ago. I had admired his super hot body on YouTube (he was the winner in one of those ballroom dances) and I was shocked to see him advertising on BP. Sure enough, he showed up at the motel and provided a hot session. So, it's hit-or-miss with BP but I'm not complaining. You need to do due diligence in your research but, in the end, it's a crapshoot (no pun intended).

As I've said before, I met our own Brian Kevin on BP long before he was on this site. And OMG was he a find! :)

I know someone personally who still occasionally advertises on BP - he's a colleague in real life, lol. (I was actually tempted to hire him. Eventually I told him I had seen his ads. He wasn't fazed by that - he did say he wanted to keep friends and clients separate, which I understood - and we've been fine about it ever since. He's a hung black guy without the stereotypical "thug" image - he told me his clients tend mostly to be married men.) In any case, I'd vouch that he's a very normal, nice, creative human being - not a scam artist or a danger.

I've seen some guys on PB who also advertise on other sites and who seem to be legit.

I think as always, one has to use their best judgement. If the guy seems too good to be true, perhaps he is. If the info is sketchy and he doesn't seem much more legit when you talk to him, think twice. If he seems human and you feel he's sincere, try it out.

What I always take with a huge grain of salt are the copycat ads. All the "thug" ads, for instance, that use the same kind of pic poses, the same kind of headlines (full of crazy symbols interspersed with the letters etc), the same "bullet point" descriptions, the ubiquitous mention of "fetishes and fantasies" (as if one always includes the other as a matter of course), the misspellings (some deliberate, some just sloppy), and on and on. If a guy's description/tone/approach is too similar to a bunch of others out there, not only does a red flag go up, but I tend to think that he's not creative enough to be original anyway, lol.

Another useful feature on BP is, if you click on the ad, you can see if there might be links to other ads placed by the same guy (previous ads from months ago, or in different cities, etc). Sometimes you'll see wildly different ads, or what's obviously a "shared" phone number between various people...or on the plus side sometimes you'll see some additional pics he didn't choose to use this time, or info that adds to what he said in the current ad. from what I understand, these links are generated by the BP system - the guy placing the ad doesn't control this. Sometimes it can be a great way to further validate (or discredit) an ad.

A PhD's worth of wisdom & data in these observations. Thank you for setting them out.

There is some possibility that we who populate these forums breathe a somewhat rarefied air.

After 7 years of hiring off Rentboy etc., I saw a kid on craigslist in 2009 who electrified me. I called, we connected, he was a great lay (top) and the first night together it went way beyond. Into a friendship that continues to this day.

Now he advertises on backpage. He has many longtime regulars, travels around New England (lives in Boston) advertising on BP, has made and saved enough at age 26 to buy a house. Etc.

And many of his friends have done the same.

There exists today a vibrant backpage escort economy, populated by principled reliable quality working guys.

Its just hard to weed out the fakes from the reals.

It is.

Put it this way.

After a while, solving the ordinary differential equations gets old.

It gets interesting to seek for some intersect between fantasy and reality.

That brings dangers.

I like them.

The rewards have, thus far, exceeded the risks.

I don't hire sex workers only to get me off, but also to investigate existential stuff.

You are my prophet.

I agree 100%.

I remember my younger, slutty years. I would go out to cruise Buenos Aires streets almost every night. Sometimes I wouldn't pick anyone. Sometimes I would hook up and the sex would be forgettable or worse. It didn't matter, what mattered was the thrill of the hunt.

It is not the same but we can easily establish an analogy. Do I like to go for the safe and hire the Sean Xaviers in the market? Yes I do. But I also enjoy the risk, the uncertainty, the unexpected. Sometimes it is a forgettable experience or worse. Sometimes is an amazing finding. Sometimes is a hot, inexperienced guy, who is not able to deliver a premium experience but who is wiling to learn. It is an experience that involves a full set of diverse ways of satisfaction.
