As soon as driverless cars began being tested from coast to coast, it seemed inevitable that the automotive technology would make its way to the world of race car driving. It began when Formula E, the international electric-powered car racing championship, announced an autonomous “Roborace” last year, an event that would have self-driving cars compete against one another. While this led to great speculation for the direction of the sport and autonomous innovation, there were also many questions surrounding the design of the vehicle. Roborace’s chief design officer Daniel Simon answered those questions—and others—after releasing images of his concept driverless race car. A former senior designer for Bugatti, Simon is considered by many to be one of the premier automotive futurists, having conceived everything from the Lotus C-01 motorcycle to the “light cycle” technology seen in the movie TRON: Legacy.
