PAUL NEWMAN OUTSIDE THE MUSIC BOX THEATRE, NYC

Paul Newman made his Broadway debut in PICNIC in 1953. Unknown at the time, he campaigned for the leading role of Hal, but director Joshua Logan did not think Newman was physically large enough to convey the lead character's athletic attributes. Ralph Meeker was given the role of Hal, with Newman playing Hal's former college roommate Alan Seymour. Newman eventually took over the lead role.
