will be in ATL on Sunday, May 22, during the day from about 12:45pm to 9:30pm between flights....

last time I was there was in 1987 and we (Dad and I) stayed at the Hyatt downtown (the atrium one) and saw Stone Mt., Peachtree St N of downtown, the Buckhead/Paces Ferry area, the underground Atlanta thing (?), Fox Theater (Liza Minnelli - before I really knew she was a gay icon - Dad and I went mostly just to see inside the historic building), and we had a nice southern meal at a casual, very well-known touristy cafeteria-like place called something like Aunt Pittypat's Tea Room (????) that was just ENE of downtown, I think......

I'll be carrying a small duffel in my hand and a light daypack on my back....I much prefer historic buildings, neighborhoods, architecture, dive restaurants and bars where the locals go, places not mentioned in the guide books.....I'm able to walk many miles if necessary......NOT into upscale restaurants, but could go back to that Pittypat place or any other locally-popular, southern-style, independent cafeteria

is there public transport direct from Hartsfield to anywhere interesting?!! (much like the Chicago trains from ORD and MDW)....is there a central bus tour place where I might grab a very short guided tour?.....

thanks for any ideas....appreciate y'alls time!

EDIT: just found that the cafeteria-like place we ate at is Mary Mac's Tea Room...is that considered by locals to be too touristy?.....

Did you go to Pittypat's Porch or Mary Mac's Tea Room? Both serve southern style food. Pittypat's Porch is downtown. I think its mostly touristy. I've never been there and don't know many locals who have. I have heard that the food is good though. Mary Mac's Tea Room is in Midtown and you need to get there by car. It's popular with locals and tourist. Food is very good. It's not cafeteria style though. You order and served at your table.

You might try Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles too? Its good southern food.

now realize it was Mary Mac's we went to many years ago, not Pittypat's.....thanks for the comments.....among the other things I mention above, will probably like to find a good, locally-popular, independent cafeteria that leans toward southern-style food....appreciate the suggestions
