I do have one plate that I think is worth a six figure price tag. After my mother died, in an old trunk I found a bunch of children's artwork including paper plate sunflower that was made by my half sister and given to my mother. The plate flower is such that my sister must have been five or six when she gave it to my mother who was her step mother. The plate just says Happy Mother's Day. I am sure there are thousands of plates like this one on refrigerators around the world but each is unique. My mother and sister have both passed on, but the tattered plate lives on.

Completely coincidentally, I just read the following story which is set in France and includes an impromptu trip to a shop that sells fine china. Hermes is namechecked.

It's Hannibal fanfiction, so the pairing is Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter, but it's neither sexually explicit nor graphically violent. Will Graham doesn't see the point in spending thousands of euros on dishes; Hannibal Lecter does.

A friend of mine collected dinnerware. He went to a shop, looking for a soup tureen, and found a lovely little Spode number.

"How much is this?" he asked the shop owner.

"$35," was her reply. [Probably worth $200.]

"Umm, well, ... okay, I'll take it."

"I have these plates that go with it [five=piece place settings for 12]. I can give you those for $25."

"ummm ... ok."

I miss my friend.

Very sweet! An item certainly worth it's weight in platinum.

The problems with heirlooms and keepsakes is that you collect them your whole life, and then they start to overwhelm you in your golden years. You look around and say "how did I accumulate all this crap, and what the hell do I do with it now" ?.... Bottom line, I am in the process of downsizing. When I die I don't want anyone to have the daunting job of disposing of the landfill. And I am doubly cautious about acquiring any "new stuff".

Love it when other (usually older) family members gift me shit they don't want because they are down-sizing.

Guess what--I don't want it either.

When I turned 25, my fairy god father, Carlos - think of a mix of Albert from Bird Cage and Tony Soprano- gave me my first set of Rosenthal china. He had inherited it from his mom and had no children or family members left to pass them onto with his estate. He wanted me to have them bc those were the very plates he used when hosting me and Mom over for my own "coming out" dinner. I remember so clearly: He passed her a full plate and said: "Dearie, your son has something to tell you, and you may want to keep your mouth shut while he finishes. Eat!" Today, the plates are mounted in an artful display (methinks) on one my dining room walls to remind me of Carlos, his humor and compassion, but the plates also remind me of the the day I finally found my own voice. As you all can tell, I can't keep my mouth shut! ;)

No, but if you have one of the faux Barbie southern belle in big hooped dress crocheted ones, I'm interested! :) My great-great-aunt used to make them and I don't have one.

Well TR, that IS a tender and touching story, and I have many of those too. But now, all that stuff really holds no memories I want to hold on to.... Its simply just a bunch of clutter that my aching bones needs to clean. Please just take it away..........

Coming back to a serious note (F-flat or B-sharp), does anyone know of a good source for Portmeirion Botanic Garden? There was a place in Montreal called Caplan Duval that had fantastic prices, horrible service, and is out of business.

Amazon seems to be first in the running.

Gallahad, I was in a TJ Maxx/Homegoods store the other day and saw various pieces of Portmeirion Botanic Garden. You can also get it on EBay. I bought some of my Portmeirion Pomona from Caplan Duval--hadn't heard that name in years. By the way, be careful about putting the tea cups in the dishwasher. The plates, bowls, etc. are sturdy, but anything with a slender handle...I lost six in one washing.
