Devil's advocate here: I don't view the gentleman in the video as a bully, but rather an R&D person who is testing the robot's reactions and abilities to respond and compensate for spills and falls. I think the robot is amazing. The R&D guy isn't bad either.

This looks like a DARPA funded project to me. And you are correct, the hot tech is testing the programming and technical ability of the unit.

 

I met someone who worked at DARPA and he told me what it's like to work there. He obviously couldn't give much detail but he was doing some really cool work. There's a book called The Department of Mad Scientists that gives an overview of the incredible work that comes out of that agency. Well worth reading.
