If true...this is a kind of interesting history of the term "Wife Beater":

First, we must address the origins of said “wife beater” shirts. Whether or not you know it, the history of the “wife beater” goes back to the Middle Ages...

I realize I'm late to the party here, but I have to object. This is a colorful story, but I can find zero evidence to suggest that it is or even might be true. It shows up in a number of places around the net, mostly using the exact same wording as when it appeared on one Paul Davidson's blog in 2005. Davidson is a writer who has spent time in the film industry (not a linguist as Mic's article on the subject lazily called him.) And unfortunately, neither this original appearance nor any other apperance offers any citations or actual evidence for anything it says.

The most damning evidence against it is that Google has zero hits for the term "waif beater" appearing anywhere on the web prior to this 2005 blog post. Nor can I find any hits, prior to 2005, connecting "waif" and "chain mail" in any way.

"Wife beater" itself seems to have originated in early 90's teen slang. Whether or not a 1947 Detroit mugshot was somehow relevant to this, I can't say, but I'm skeptical of that, too.

I think this was most likely an amusing hoax from 2005. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet, folks.

Excellent sleuthing, @Golem. Whatever one calls the garment, when worn by the right man, my bulbous naughty parts start to tingle.

Those familiar with '80's porn will recall Mike Henson and John Davenport sported tight tank tops in "Big Guns." This image from the movie shows Davenport with his tank pulled over his head:

I couldn't find a still of Henson from the movie, but this photo depicts him fully erect, wearing a pulled up tank: http://www.smutjunkies.com/profiles/h/e_stars/Henson_Mike/C1R/1767023100000.jpg

What wonderful memories.

@dcman Good luck with your hunt. Growing up around lowbrow homophobes who went outside in their undershirts left me fascinated with that iconic image. Athletic, virile, unattainable men who might be dangerous - and who might hit a woman; they attracted and repulsed me at the same time.

That scene with John Davenport remains one of my favorites. He teaches Chris Grey to shoot, and while standing behind him steadying his arms, slowly slides his hands down his torso and starts fondling him...then fucks the living daylights out of him. Everything in that movie is pretty good - porn that has some sense of setup to the scene, rather than just jumping into the sex.

Yeah, I definitely have a wife beater fetish also. Portrays a certain image. I always ask that my guy wear a classic jockstrap, like ones you'd actually wear for athletic purposes, and not the frou frou ones that popular these days because that's very fetishized to me too. And a white wife beater, the more ragged the better. And a backwards baseball cap and mesh athletic shorts. Mmm.
