When I saw the ingredients the first thought that popped into my head was "I was not aware packaged salad dressing was part of the Southern culinary tradition." Turns out it isn't.

Not much into packaged dressing.....although I think it would be fine.. I made my own ranch dressing...easy to do. btw....if you didn't know where ranch dressing became famous......well right here in Santa Barbara.

I think the reason it's packet va fresh is because of the water. Too much liquid if you put in actual dressing. From what I gather it's going to be pretty wet just from the hot beef and the oily grease of the butter

In a recipe like this one which sounds good (Really, what could go wrong?) if one objects to dry packaged ranch dressing (why ranch dressing anyway?--too bland) why go to all the trouble of making dressing from scratch just for a few tablespoons (What sane person would buy a whole quart of buttermilk for one teaspoon to go into a 4 pound pot roast?) Wouldn't a blip of jarred ranch dressing do just as well? --or any bottled salad dressing of your choice. I would have gone with some kind of vinegar based dressing, not a creamy dressing--better for what here is essentially some form of barbecue. Or else throw in some herbs and a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar instead.

I like your adjustments to the recipe but when I do a recipe for the first time....no matter how simple...I like to do as written. I get a feel for it then adjust if necessary.

so decided to make this today vs. tomorrow. Its pretty crappy out today too....its been cooking about 30 minutes and its already full of liquid from the hot beef and the butter. I suppose you could reduce the butter and add the vinegar, but the salad dressing is acting as a seasoning of sorts. I suspect the real reason this is such a popular recipe is because it is super easy to make, you buy almost everything premixed and you only need 5 ingredients with the two mixes which since many people don't enjoy cooking it becomes simple. Also i suspect most of us are white trash at heart :)

Let's see now. My post this morning was about guns, so let's go a different direction, shall we.....haha.

I know this isn't the Martha Stewart Forum.... although I bet Daddy's a pretty good cook.... and I know we all love to talk about sex... but since this recipe has gone viral lately, I'm trying it today. Some people think great food is better than sex.... have to think about that. Anyway, if the NY Times loves it, we'll.... Mississippi Roast. If you've tried it and didn't like it, don't tell us till tomorrow, please. I want to judge for myself.

This actually reminds me of one of my first experiences after coming out when I was in P'town at a leather bar there. I bought and packed a bunch of new gear, ready for a sexually charged experience with older, more experienced hot guys. Learning from them was really exciting and finally being able to do it without paranoia was exhilarating. I made a few friends and even felt like I was finally attractive, albeit in an awkward inexperienced way. I was trying hard to look the part, mind you. What ended up happening though was that all these butch, masculine guys standing around this bar, smoking cigars and looking tough ended up swapping recipes for over an hour. It was simultaneously surreal, comical, and strangely exciting. Needless to say, I was hooked...and picked up some good tips in the kitchen!! LOL.

I've had mine in for about 3 1/2 hours....just going to let it do its thing, see what happens. But I was thinking if too much liquid, boil it down, make a sauce. We'll see.

This recipe is pretty much very low carb.....meat, butter, dressing....so no weight gain here. However, what you eat it with....rice, noodles, bread, potatoes, etc...that's the weight.

I guarantee you even if they eat that one day, they'll make it up the next day with regular barbeque and plenty of ketchup.

When I am looking for a great pie recipe, I always start with Southern cookbooks--like award winning recipes from the Mississippi State Fair.

Where have you two been all my life? I seem to have been following the wrong threads. Will start spending more time on the recipe threads in future.

I just looked at the recipe. I can just imagine folks in Mississippi going off to the store to buy some kosher salt. Or actually, I'm sure they would already have some of it in their pantry.
