It was the birthday I spent watching my high-school boyfriend (the one who lent me his Carlos Castaneda books) compete in a karate tournament at another high school. (He was a brown belt at the time.) I don't remember how he did, other than neither the worst nor the best, or when or where we got something to eat, but I had a great time, multiplied by the fact it was my 18th birthday. A friend of his whom I don't remember as part of the tournament drove us. He had the effrontery to turn the garage light on when he stopped at his house briefly on the way back to "catch" us making out. I could have done without the light glaring in my eyes, but otherwise didn't care.

Just FYI, I never went further than first base until college. After one flirtation (by my partner, not me) with second base, I skipped third altogether. Not a patient kind of a girl. In retrospect, I regret not having done as much exploration of naked bodies as I might, instead preferring to get to the fucking, though I still enjoyed makeout sessions.

Carlos Castaneda! I still remember those times!

1992 it was with a guy introduced by a mutual friend. The guy in question was not my type at all, but we hit it off and agreed to have dinner. We sat and chatted for hours, and eventually were the last patrons in the restaurant. Definitely my best first date ever. We dated for a few months before he broke it off.

My best date ever was with a deaf guy. It truly took me out of my comfort zone, helped me learn about my biases, I learned cool sign language phrases, I made a fool of myself, I stuck my foot in my mouth quite a few times, and thru it all, my date was gracious, funny, forgiving, non-judgmental, and incredibly communicative...actually a far better communicator that I could ever hope to be. Fast forward, we were partnered for 4 glorious years! Our last date was in his hospital room as he laid on his bed in a comma. I brought a picnic basket and I did all the talking, but somehow and strangely, I felt he was listening. Yes, it has taken me years to process all this sh!t, but I can finally express it and recognize the best of it.

Hard to pick just one; there were many of them, and all of them with.....hang on.....my best girl....from 1992 to 1995. She was special, and I thought alot about marrying her. If I had, I might not have met some of yall. HAHAHA! Why did I not marry her? It was not about the guy-girl, guy-guy thing/struggle; I realized that I was happiest being single. I'm not a relational guy at all. Love my "me" time.

Best date...May 1st, it's not too hot yet it's not too cold. ;)

Actually it was a New Year's Eve. My boyfriend and I walked home from a small party good friends had thrown. It was snowing lightly, the tiny flakes that only really cold weather produces. There was no wind and the streets were deeply silent. Just us and the snow flickering and sparkling in the street lights. We got to out apartment and he put on "A Nightingale Sang In Barkley Square" and we slow danced in the dark.

It has been decades, yet I still remember the damp of melted snow in his, now long gone, hair and the smell of his skin as I nuzzled his neck.

River trip to Kathrine's Landing. It was a double date with another couple. Me and the gf, but I was in love with the other guy, Glen, and he was a beauty. Three days in, just when I was about lose my mind, The girls wanted to drive the boat, so I suggested a run to the store for supplies and gas. That left us alone at the camp for a couple of hours. He suggested nude swimming, well I was young and cute then, with a full head of hair. It as wonderful, especially the next three days as we would throw flirtatious glances at each other while the girls chatted away being none the wiser. I still have those pictures tucked away in a drawer somewhere around here. I run into them every now and again, and it always brings a smile, but with a little sadness for all the years that have gone by, and I'm left wondering what became of him.

That's very sweet. :)

Palm Springs...many, many years ago.

I fell in love with the love-of-my-life the very first day we hung out, but we spent the first couple years as best friends. We had talked about it many times, but he just didn't feel "that way" about me.

We were spending the weekend at his family's condo in Palm Springs and went out to some club. We had danced together hundreds of times, but something was different this time. I saw it in his eyes. There was an intensity, a predatory look, that I had never seen before. The dancing became very sexual and he gave me the first real kiss of our relationship. Of course we took it back to the condo and had several other firsts that night.

That was the start of our life as a couple. It wasn't perfect, but it was the best and most important relationship of my life. I actually don't remember the condo sex that vividly, but I remember every single detail of that dance floor and that first kiss.
