Days after Campbell's Soup unveiled a new commercial featuring gay dads, a right-wing group notorious for getting worked up over everything from Toys 'R' Us to Chobani yogurt slammed the ad for "normalizing sin."

In a post on its website, One Million Moms members argued that Campbell's Soup is "attempting to desensitize viewers" with the clip, which is part of a larger campaign called "

."

I saw this ad and thought it was great... it's a very ordinary 'soup commercial' - emotionally warm, wholesome, nurturing and generally make-you-feel-good. That's what soup is for.

From a business perspective this tells me that a marketing team within a company that lives or dies by effective marketing has researched and executed a campaign they think will sell soup. As part of that research the risk of alienating a 'million moms' was surely considered and decided to be a lesser financial risk than the benefit of emotionally engaging those who do not see two dads eating soup as a sign of the apocalypse.

What struck me about this is the rhetoric at the million mom's website - it sounds eerily similar to the dogma of jihadist groups that have been front-and-center lately. "Glorifying" an "unnatural" marriage in the case of the Campbell's ad; "mockery of our lord" and "blasphemy" directed toward a show called 'Black Jesus'; "biblical values and truths" and "God will not tolerate this sinful nature" in the case of a American Girl doll catalog. The common theme is one of intolerance taken to an extreme which is based on a handful of people's interpretation of the will of God, assertion that all others should believe and adhere to the same orthodoxy, and willingness to take their agenda to an extreme so as to be imposed upon others.

(By the way, if the website is to be believed, if you step foot into a Carl's Jr. hamburger restaurant you'll feel the fiery flames of a hellish abyss licking at your toes and that cholesterol-clogged arteries will be the least of your worries in a place of unconsumed, ever-burning sulphur.)

According to their Facebook page, One Million Moms has 80,000 followers. According to their own website, they are "searching for one million moms" to join them, which hasn't exactly worked out.

Bigot inflation. You just can't trust the Jesus Christers.

Ahhh, the American Taliban.

Time to go eat at a Carl's Jr. Even though I hate fast food.

Carl Karcher, late founder of Carl's Jr., was a John Bircher and virulent homophobe. He was the primary funder of the California Briggs Initiative in 1978, which would bar gay and lesbian teachers in public schools. (He lost by a million votes.) So, if you hate fast food, know that their burgers were funding hate.

This is cute! I remember when people were offended by the Cheerios commercial that featured an interracial couple.

I'll bet you anything the Cheerios commercial would draw more hate than this one even today. The idea of two non-threatening (i.e., white cisgender) men working together to care for a child when many times one man can't be bothered will appeal to moms. And straight guys will be impressed, especially those with kids of their own. Parenting is a hard job.

But biracial girls are a menace.

Sincerely, a biracial girl (Asian/White)

Don't worry if you can't make yourself. I eat enough of it to make up the difference. :(

I had to turn off the first episode of Queer As Folk. I was a virgin at the time. The sounds from Brian deflowering Justin-all the loud thumps-and moans of pain were making me sick to my stomach.

Difference is, unlike eating Campbell's Sodium with Anonymous Ingredients, there is some pleasure in learning how to bottom.
