You're what you eat! Processed meats (and probably red meats) can cause cancer.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a research division of the World Health Organization, announced Monday that processed meats such as bacon, sausage, ham, and hot dogs cause cancer.

The organization also identified red meat as “probably carcinogenic,” meaning it’s likely to cause cancer as well.

Processed meats were classified as a Group 1 carcinogen to humans, in the same group as smoking tobacco and asbestos exposure. Substances in this group have “sufficient evidence” of carcinogenicity in humans, according to the IARC.

"The experts concluded that each 50-gram portion of processed meat (less than 2 ounces) eaten daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18 percent." Wow. They're comparing it to smoking and asbestos exposure. That is quite a bit of increase.

I think if you have a steady diet of processed meat it's no big surprise you have a great cancer risk. So it's not just rat feces or bird beaks in the boloni you have to worry about. When you eat that shit it takes allot longer to move through. I wonder if that's not the problem. The longer it sits the more risk it becomes.

Let me preface this by saying, I'm not a Dr or nutritionist. Well... I take all these 'studies' that we've heard about all these years with a skeptical eye. In this case since the WHO is part of the UN.....which is probably one of the most corrupt organizations....the study might be interesting but that's all. Looking back at what 'they' said was unhealthy for you...... coffee, eggs, fat, red wine, avocados, coconut oil, etc. and then studies showed these items and others have health benefits. Remember when butter was unhealthy and people switch to margarine... what the hell is in that.. haha.. Of course the latest is about milk. Government said whole milk was unhealthy so drink non fat or low fat. Now they're saying not so.

So........ Eat well, eat balanced, eat sensible, watch your carbs... and enjoy your food and your life.

And if I smoke one random cigarette I die 10 seconds earlier. Julia Child (my hero): everything in moderation. She ate better than almost everyone and lived a long happy life. My dream is for them to find me dead with a glass of single malt next to me.

I'm definitely not a proponent of eating processed meat (or beef, pork, and lamb in general for the most part, although some cuts are OK). That being said, I think the report said that the risk increased by 18% if eaten on a daily basis, not for occasional use. This compares to 2000% for cigarette smoking, so one has to keep things in perspective. Also, far less than 10% of the population gets colon cancer, so even if one ate processed meat daily, the increased risk overall would only be about 1%. Also, colon cancer is an easy disease to catch in the pre-cancerous stages, or in its early stages at worse, and there is very good treatment for colon cancer (unlike lung cancer or pancreatic cancer, for example). So nothing to be panicking in the streets about.

P.S. An emptied glass of single malt next to you. ;)

No. I think a bit left is perfect. Empty indicates sadness, a small amount left means a happy death.

I knew a guy who went exactly that way. There was no sign of distress. He just expired, with a little bit of his beloved MacAllan (24, never 18) still in the glass on his nightstand.

I had the fortune of seeing Julia Child at the Vons supermarket in Santa Barbara many years ago. I was just walking down the aisle, heard this voice..her voice!!!.....looked up and there she was. Someone had approached her and said 'Hello Ms. Child' and as I walked by, Ms. Child said to her, 'It's Julia.' Sweet.

Living in Cambridge for not quite 30 years, I got to know Julia a little bit at mutual friends' cocktail parties, dinner parties, etc. She was as delightful as you might expect. No pretensions; and not interested in talking about herself. When you sat beside her, she wanted to know about you. Curious and interested in everything.

The headline was misleading (as was the article). Here's a better explanation of what red meat definitely being a carcinogen means:

http://scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2015/10/26/processed-meat-and-cancer-what-you-need-to-know/

"To take an analogy, think of banana skins. They definitely can cause accidents, explains Phillips, but in practice this doesn’t happen very often (unless you work in a banana factory). And the sort of harm you can come to from slipping on a banana skin isn’t generally as severe as, say, being in a car accident.

But under a hazard identification system like IARC’s, ‘banana skins’ and ‘cars’ would come under the same category – they both definitely do cause accidents."

I take what these scientists and drs say with a grain of salt. I once had a Dr lecture me about what I was eating. Later that day I see him pulling out of the drive thru at Jack In the Box.

Let me say at the outset that I have no financial ties as far as any of you know to the U.S. Beef Council!:p

Report: Red Meat Linked To Contentedly Patting Belly

NEWS IN BRIEF October 27, 2015

VOL 51 ISSUE 43 · Food · Science & Technology · Science ·Meat

WASHINGTON—Saying the effects were almost immediate and largely unavoidable, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture released a report Tuesday linking red meat to contentedly patting one’s belly. “Our data show a strong, statistically significant correlation between consuming servings of red meat and pushing back one’s chair, letting out a satisfied sigh, and gently patting or rubbing one’s abdomen with either one or both hands,” said lead researcher Elliott Hyde, who explained that eating cuts of beef, pork, or lamb was also found to cause acute sereneness and glazing-over of the eyes. “Subjects who ate steaks, burgers, roasts, or chops were also 80 percent more susceptible than non-meat-eaters to groaning happily at audible volumes, and were particularly at risk of uttering vocalizations that contained the phrases ‘Oh, yeah,’ ‘Mmm,’ and ‘That was good.’” The report further revealed that the consumption of processed meats, such as bacon and sausage, was linked to a 100 percent chance of seconds.

Maybe we better get back on track and talk about escorts, etc. I'll start....,Julia was not an escort....:)

No. But by all reports her sex life was as full of life as her cooking. Quite the broad, in the best sense of the term. I only wish I'd had the pleasure of meeting her.
