I was recently flattered to see my

nom de plume as the topic of a discussion.

I think it's time that a gentleman known

to many of you who contributes lavishly,

steadily and fearlessly to this Board

be similarly honored.

Namely, Doug69.

WHAT IS IT WITH THIS GUY?

Theories, please.

What do you mean "what's with this guy"?

Everybody loves Backa Baa.

IMHO,

Doug is no different than any of the rest of us, in that:

He is free to express his opinions on any subject not forbidden by the rules of this site.

He is free to express those opinions for any reason, whether to force people to consider their own position, or to start a flame war, or just to ask or answer a question.

The anonymity provided by this MC allows for all of us to be whomever we want.

Having said all that, my take is that Doug is his own person, that is: not some made up persona, but actually a real person who expresses real opinions and feelings on a wide variety of subjects and interests. As such, he gets my respect even if sometimes I don't agree with his opinions.

And as for those opinions I don't agree with (many and often), I get to say I don't agree whenever I feel like taking the time to log in. But one thing about Doug, he will Cause you to think (a good thing) and he will often make you back up you positions and statements (another good thing). Sometimes tho, he won't accept what you offer in evidence.

Don't you just love democracy?

The great thing about being liberals and conservatives is that when all else fails, we at least can cancel out each other's vote. Here's to the day when we can begin to listen to one another again.

A Pollyanna wish for a better world :+

Curious that you would start this thread. Still trying to figure out what it says about you. Will have to consult my Psych 101 textbook since I am not a shrink, I only played one on TV.

We regret this brief hijacking of your thread.

What the hell is Backa Baa? Does everyone really love it if at least some of us don't know what it is? Even mighty Google couldn't turn up Backa Baa. (Google thought I meant Baa Baa, which, I didn't.)

We now return control of your thread to you.

I'm SO glad you asked this - I've been wanting to ask for weeks since I joined this board - but figured it must be some in-joke or something.

Maybe he really means baklava? :-)

(I also wish the signatures could be in smaller type than the rest of the message, so they don't always seem like *part of* the message. Ah, well...)

I wonder what makes him so intensely vicious.

Perhaps is that he seems to be in the

minority of political views here? But as I

see it,

his style of communication sabotages

his credibility.

MEANing what you say..

Well,

Sometimes threads get under people's skin and a lot of MEAN goes on in these pages. It's not just from one person. I have gone off in threads (always regretted it later and wished we had the edit function back then). And there's been thread after thread pleading for N I C E. While Nice may have it's place, sometimes fire is required. Taken in total, this board has a wonderful variety of people, ideas, and experiences.

Since there is no filter on thoughts other than the ones listed in the FAQs, people can get as mean as they want. Our responsibilities as readers is to sift through the rhetoric to the thought behind it, and judge it's validity. Using MEAN can alter a person's reaction to an otherwise logical point.

I have had the good fortune to meet a number of the regular posters in the RW. Knowing them, I have sometimes gasped when I read something they posted. I am sure they have done the same with my posts. Fact is, it's impossible to separate what is real opinion and what is manufactured (taking on a persona to pretend, like fantasy and just saying stuff for shock value. some of that goes on here too) I don't check in at any other on line MC, but people tell me that it is the same or worse on other boards. I believe them.

Being catty is a Gay stereotype for a reason.

But if you are expecting civility as the overriding concept, you are in the wrong place.

They can, if you include the right HTML code.

Before: <font size=2>

After: </font>

Substitute square brackets for the angle brackets, and uncheck the plain text box when composing.

It'll look like this.

RE: Doug69 and Backaa Baa

A. There is a thread about books in the political forum. Right now I can't remember if the poster there is Doug or VaHawk - with my luck and memory, VaHawk - but whether it is him or not, it would seem to me to go a long ways towards explaining Doug.

B. The question of Bakaa Baa has been explained on at least two other threads. Do you remember the TV commercial where the butterfly representing a computer company is standing on the front porch of someone's home and there is a long line of people coming up the steps, most of them wanting to sell the home owner something or other, and the homeowner signals the butterfly about each one and usually the butterfly pulls a lever and they fall through the floor? Well, though there is a long line left at the end of the commercial, the last one we see the butterfly jettison starts his sales speach with a phrase which I hear as "Everyone loves baklava!" And I cheer, because I do love most deserts. But our distinguished friend hears it as "Everyone loves Backaa Baa." And thinks it is cute and kitschy. Which, if I agreed with him on what was being said, I would, too. And that's why it's his tag line.

RE: Doug69 and Backaa Baa

Sorry, Bilbo not me on the books thread! But thanks for thinking of me! :)

Why does anyone have to "explain" Doug69? Does he need explanation? Especially by those who frequent this site? I will state right now! that Doug69 is my very Favorite poster here, despite the fact that we are 180 degrees apart on many issues. But, you know what?, despite that, Doug69 respects my "right" to agree to disagree as I hopefully extend the same rights to him in return.

RE: Doug69 and Backaa Baa

It did occur to me, even as I was posting it, that it was probably a bit presumptuous of me to try to explain someone. After all, as I once said to a preoperative TS, "No, I don't Have to Understand you. I only have to love and accept you." But, the mind is often slower than the finger and I had already punched the post it button.
