Yes. The countercharged diagonal red stripes were added for Ireland when it officially became a member of the UK, and until all but Northern Ireland attained independence. Without the diagonal red, the flag is the King's Colors, dating back to the reign of James I in the 1600s, when England and Scotland were "united in the crown," meaning they were still two separate and independent nations but shared the same sovereign king. This flag became the UK flag after the Act of Union (1707) by which the two kingdoms were joined to form the United Kingdom of Great Britian under Queen Anne, and was the British flag in the American colonies until they gained their independence from the mother country.
