So I recently used pricline auction for my st paul trip. After recieving a winning bid I went to the hotels website and saw a lower rate same. I alterted priceline and they refunded me the difference plus 20% and recoeved a promo code for another 20% off my next book, which I will use for my NYC trip in Jan. It pays to be on top ;)

^ very good tip. I hadn't thought to double-check a priceline auction like that. I've generally stayed away from the auctions because it feels like bait and switch when you get a good rate but you find out when you check in that it's another $20 for parking per day and $15 for internet.

I've used PL for close to 10 yrs and this was the first hickup I've come across. But refunding the difference, plus 20%, plus 20% off next booking they made it more than roght for me. As for parking fee and internet just about everyone charges. I mainly use my phone for internet and have unlimited data with my carrier so I'm covered in that dept and since I'm a bad bad driver and no longer drive parking is never an issue for me.

and don't forget those "resort fees"......what a racket....

currently like using hotwire.....I know it's unknown what place you'll get, but reading between the lines sometimes works and I often only want to be in a certain area at a certain "star"-level and don't care what the specific place is.....very comparable to the "name your own price" deals at priceline.....

Hotel prices have gone up so much in the last couple of years that PL isn't the deal it once was. I used to astonish myself at how much off rack rate you could rooms on PL for. It doesn't happen that often anymore.

That's exactly what an escort told me on a recent trip to FTL. If you know the area, reading between the lines, you can often pretty much figure out what hotel they are talking about. It was the area he wanted to be in, and with the "star"-level posted, he was very sure that it was the Hilton. Indeed it was, and he got a great price.

I think that the concept of hotel star levels is widely misunderstood. Many people believe that the star level is an indication of how luxurious, clean or "nice" a hotel is going to be. In fact, it has nothing to do with any subjective factors, it is only an indication of the amenities that the hotel offers. To be a four-star hotel, I believe it must generally have at least one full-service restaurant, a lounge and probably a business center. If it is 3-stars, it will most likely serve breakfast, but probably not other meals. And a 2-star hotel usually has no restaurant or lounge, but might have excellent service, stunning rooms and a great location.
