(Note: The following is the AP story. Notice the AP's belittling use of the effeminate gay stereotype (I put it in bold). If this were a black civil rights issue, would they say he threw his bling bling into the ring? If this were an Asian civil rights issue, would they say he threw his chopsticks into the rice paddy? Is there anyplace where we can get objective mainstream reporting anymore?)

AP - BOSTON (March 23) - Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura threw his feather boa into the gay marriage ring Monday, calling it a "cop out" for Massachusetts lawmakers to send a constitutional ban to voters.

"We have a representative-style government. Represent your people and vote and stand by what you believe in," said Ventura, who as a professional wrestler was known for his flamboyant costumes. "Civil rights issues should not be put on the ballot."

Currently a fellow at Harvard University's Institute of Politics, Ventura appeared at the Statehouse alongside State Auditor Joseph DeNucci, a former boxer.

"We're two tough guys here to show support for a basic human right," DeNucci said.

Clad in jeans and sneakers and wearing a full beard and a shaggy ring of hair, Ventura asked, "How is my marriage under attack if two gays or lesbians down the street want to make a lifelong commitment to themselves?"

Ventura, a one-term governor elected on the Reform Party ticket, added: "Love is bigger than government. Think about that."

I guess this will now settle the matter and all of that nasty controversy will just go away. Jesse Ventura, of all people! We're pulling out all of the stops on this one!

Rick, with all due respecct, I don't think they were belittling anyone or using a gay stereotype.

Jesse Ventura was known for wearing outlandish things in the ring when he was a wrestler, and the article even refers to that later on:

>Ventura, who as a professional wrestler was known for his

>flamboyant costumes.

In particular, he was known for wearing a feather boa, and it became characteristic of him. So I think that's what the writer had in mind, livening up a tired old metaphor, in the same way that he might have said of Churchill that he threw his cigar into the ring, or of Janet Jackson that she stuck her boob into the ring. x(

Well, after all, he WAS the elected Governor of a state... and *not* California, a normal one!

And note that it's the Institute of Politics. They usually have a few Fellows at a time, and they do them short-term, for a semester or a year.

As much as I'd like to stand up for CA, I have to give you this one.

And any Garrison Keillor fan knows how "normal" Minnesota is. :9

Or Rick Munroe, the dumb whore, putting his foot in his mouth again, when he really ought to stick to dick. :9 I guess I should have done a little research (or perhaps read the article instead of skimming). I do think the AP sucks, though, for some really biased stuff about Howard Dean a few months ago...and that's why I was quick to think the worst of them.
