Just wondering if anyone has ever stayed there? How is it? It is cheap so I was just thinking if it is decent it might be worth the savings..

Thanks so much.

Haven't stayed there.

Where is it? Do they have a web site?

I stayed there about 20 years ago and I really liked the location. At the time they advertised it as "newly remodeled". What that really meant was a 5th coat of paint over the 3 layers of wall paper.

They do have some rooms with private baths but you generally end up with a semi-private bath (shared between two rooms) or a common bath (located down the hall). When you book your reservation, make you have your bath type in writing and then "hope" that's really what you end up with. They tried to put me in a shared bath room even though my reservation was for a private bath. At first the desk clerk claimed minimal English skills and said he couldn't understand me. His English quickly improved when I told him I was calling my travel agent to have him either fix the problem or book me into another hotel.

Another drawback is the bed size. For a single person, they will usually only give you a single-sized bed (kind of like what they have in college dorms). For two people, they offer double-sized beds. I don't think they have any queen or king beds.

Because of the low price, you usually get a lot of back-packing kids that share a single room. I think, at one point, they even offered youth hostel or dorm-type rooms with bunk beds.

I went to NYC last December and decided NOT to stay there again. I spent a few extra bucks to make sure I got a queen sized bed and a private bath.

I stayed at Ramada's New Yorker Hotel.

This really worked out well for me since I arrived by train and they were only 1 block away. They are also located on a corner with a subway stop. I'd definitely stay there again.

Thanks,

I was just surfing and found it, I usually find good prices on Priceline but figured I would check it out. I will check out the New Yorker, I would rather spend a few extra bucks and be comfy.

I stayed at the New Yorker just over a year ago and it was fine. The bed was queen size and the view was great, Empire State Building, which tells you every time you look out the window you are in NYC (get an east facing room). The downsides, although relatively unimportant, are that the rooms are smallish and the bathrooms also small (very 1930's). But the furnishings were modern. Great location too, an easy walk to Chelsea and some good restaurants and gay bars.

Don't bother. The Pickwick Arms is as spartan as they get. Rooms are tiny, and bathrooms (if you have one) are even smaller. Absolutely NO amenities, and the "doubles" are as small as the singles. The staff is pleasant, and the clientele is mostly backpackers and foreign visitors. But I have found much better deals in Manhattan for the same price (or less).
