I love watching tv series on Netflix -- in order, taking note of character development, etc. My current project is Death in Paradise.

Tonight I was watching Season 3, Episode 3: An Artistic Murder. It is about the murder of a charming male escort (for women, of course) who seems to be on the top of his profession, half the women on the island panting after him, works hard to make them feel good. He's the murder victim. Friend of one of the continuing characters in the series.

Hired by a particularly tough lady judge -- the "Dragon Lady"-- who the Commissioner would love to see humiliated. Not a very sympathetic character. Until she is interviewed about why she is infatuated with him, when she becomes animated, disclosing her passion for a man who has made her feel alive and happy and funny and full of life. She tries to describe her emotions, why she was so moved by him. Her key line: "I was in love with who I was when I was with him".

I thought this quite moving, quite true. And the program treated the escort with respect -- putting a lot of professional skill into understanding his clients, to bring them alive, and murdered because of a moment of honesty about something he knew. Worth watching, IMHO.

Does this ring any bells?

All his clients clearly adored him. So he was murdered for other reasons. In a murder mystery there has to be a murder -- a necessary plot device. The choice of the escort as the victim underscores the dangers guys like that face -- the powerless of the world. One of the elements I found intriguing in this program is that he was in fact murdered because of an intelligent observation that threatened someone who intended to profit from fraud, not because of his profession.
