I see the catechism hasn't improved any from when I read my mother's catechism at age nine or so and decided "eh, Catholicism: not for me" and threw my lot in with the protesters, I mean Protestants, in a mainline, liberal, pro-civil rights, anti-Vietnam War racially integrated church that has welcomed LGBT members and advocated for their rights since 1998. Though tbh, my mom was something of a lapsed Catholic herself.

You know you are really not a Catholic unless you are a lapsed Catholic. You have the teachings of Jesus and then the doctrine of the Church. Any intelligent individual will see the difference and come to grips with the less than infallible role of the Church. At least, that was what my priest said the last time I fucked him.

Ha. There may be more lapsed Catholics in the world than active Catholics.

 

The non-fundy Protestants already realize there's a difference between Jesus's teachings and the institutional church, hence are not as dogmatic as other branches of Christianity. No one batted an eye when I quoted from the Tao te ching on the eve of the 1st Gulf War at a church committee meeting. (Same vicinity, different church.)

Most Catholics I know do not follow all of the Church's teachings. In fact, almost every one of them are "cafeteria Catholics" who pick and choose what they follow and don't follow.
