Hi

I'll be in New York soon. Any suggestion for a relaxing week-end out of town ? How gay friendly is Newport, RI ? (I'll be there with a friend)

Any other suggestions ?

What time of year are you thinking of? I've been to Newport several times to see the "cottages" which is sort of fun but I think the town is mostly geared towards straight families. I'm sure the must be a few bars and some of the guest houses are geared towards a gay clients.

If it's late spring, summer or early fall and you want GAY and like the beach, you can't do better than Fire Island. Some of the most gorgeous beaches in the world (assuming they are still there after this winter) and the Pines and Cherry Grove are almost totally gay. The Pines is much more upscale with the Grove slanted towards lesbians, but still lots of men.

The best part is you don't need a car and can do it easily from NY City by train and ferry.

Further out on Long Island are the Hamptons on the south fork and the north fork which has more of a New England feel. Both have beautiful beaches and expensive homes to go with them. They both have their share of very upscale gays.

Within an hours drive from the city you have beautiful towns along the Hudson River and further north some great scenary. NY is a beautiful state.

New Hope, Pennsylvania is a pretty town full of antique shops and used to attract a lot of gay people. I haven't been in a few years so that may have changed.

New Hope/Lambertville is still very gay, and still charming. It would be a good choice for a weekend retreat, especially if you like antiquing or biking on the towpath along the river.

Newport is not a gay haven, compared to Fire Island and Provicetown.

I spent a week there during the summer of 2000 and enjoyed it a lot

despite rainy weather. The beaches are wonderful, as are the mansions and the restaurants. There's a long 5-mile walking path along the ocean which I did every day -- nice change from my local gym. Another

good, if slightly unusual, NE choice would be Rockport-Plum Island-

Newberryport in Massachusetts/New Hampshire.

Thanks for the advice guys, at the end I have decided to stay in New York. I think March is probably the wrong time for weekends away, but not too far away.
