Malaysia Airlines 'technically bankrupt', I wonder why?

The newly appointed chief executive of loss-making Malaysia Airlines said on Monday the carrier is "technically bankrupt", underlining the case for a restructuring to cut a third of jobs, scrap some international routes and review its long-haul fleet.

 

"We are technically bankrupt...the decline of performance started long before the tragic events of 2014," Christoph Mueller said, speaking at a news conference. Already squeezed into years of losses by stiff regional competition, the carrier was seriously affected last year by two separate jet disasters.

One does wonder about these things sometimes....coincidence?

In quality reviews, Malaysia often used to play Avis to Singapore Airlines Hertz, and in my experience with them it was true. But a lot has changed in the past two decades, and they seem to have succumbed to fierce competition from newer Asian airlines.

I haven't flown with them since they were MAS, but the collective wisdom is that they over-reached trying to build a huge network. MH17 and 370 certainly didn't help, although 17 was hardly their fault. They are offering some of the best fares from Australia to Asian destinations (I haven't checked Air Asia and the like) and the UK and they are in One World so that's a plus for me. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

You have a point, things always make me wonder. Maybe we need a new conspiracy theory? LOL

 

I still wonder what happened, but I'm more inclined to agree with Occam and think the most logical answer is the most like to be right, an accident.
