I need a new lap top. Mine has been on a slow death spiral for a couple of years. Waiting for it to explode.

Question: When my old one is hooked up to the new one to transfer info, what is the chance of spreading a virus that I know I have, to the new one? Thanks, WG2

If the virus is one that auto-replicates, the chances are 100%.

I would cleanse the old machine first. (Frankly, I disconnect an infected machine from everything until it has been disinfected.)

Just out of curiosity, if you know you have this virus why haven't you rid yourself of it?

I'll be honest with you guys. The message popped up from Microsoft, and seemed legit. "Your computer has been infected with three porn viruses." That was it. NOW, I do not look at porn that much anymore, since I have all that I can handle! As we speak, I getting ready to go over to the Geek Squad to see what they can do.

There is no message like that from Microsoft. (You know that NOW.)

Once Geek Squad pronounces the machine clean, and BEFORE you transfer anything to the new laptop, purchase and install a good anti-virus program an make sure it's running during the file transfer. (Just as extra safety.) LET IT AUTO-UPDATE AND KEEP IT CURRENT. A-V programs are the only thing on my systems that I allow to auto-update.
