When speaking about escorts, Charlie Sheen once said, "I don't pay them for sex, I pay them to leave." And, like Sheen, a lot of Wall Street guys don't need to pay for sex either, but they'd rather.

"When I'm looking for a wife, I don't call an escort; so, when I'm looking for sex, I don't call a civilian," Jay, a senior sales trader, told me.

So, why do some Wall Street guys love calling hookers? There are four basic reasons: 1) quality, 2) confidentiality 3) ease and 4) They can let their freak flags fly.

"You can do things you'd never ask your girlfriend to do," Jay added. "A lot of the younger guys on my desk like to boast they don't have to pay for sex. But they don't get it. It's like a business deal. And both parties are happy."

"Chelsea" moved to Manhattan 10 years ago from Canada specifically to be an escort. She's about to celebrate her 30th birthday. "After I was done with school, this was my plan. And I'll do it until I'm done doing it." She charges $1,000 an hour for her services and has a lot of interaction with traders.

I don't remember the comedian, but it's one of the best lines ever: I'll never get married again, I'll find a woman I hate and buy her a house!

I've always heard it attributed to Willie Nelson as "I'm not going to get married again, I think I'll just find a woman that hates me, then buy her a house."

"Freak Flags Fly?"....I like that :D

I think that goes back to the 60's. Hippies and hair. I believe it is a line from the song Almost Cut My Hair and it is also used in the Musical Hair. But that is neither here nor there.

A great article, thanks for posting. It brought back memories working on Wall Street in the early 1990s. On Friday afternoons, doing coke and inviting strippers over was common on the firm's trading floor. The one thing I question though, is the $1,000/hour rate that the young lady seems to get. I find that very high, and probably not very believable. Only very, very few 'girls' may be able to get that. While I generally think that the girls make more money per hour than the guys do, this seems be a huge discrepancy. I don't know of any male escort charging $1,000/hour. Keep in mind that in a city like New York, there are many, many women escorts available. The competition among them is fierce.

Johnny Carson used to do the joke often, but without the "find a woman I hate part"

It struck me at the time that Spitzer may have had an easier time flying under the radar if he had hired women in the "middle class" price range of $300-$400/hour or close to. He may have had to worry about one of them recognizing him and blackmailing him, but on the other hand his name would not have ended up in the address book of a high-rolling madam doing well enough to attract the authorities' interest in busting her operation.

Client #9. As the NY Post headline screamed: HO NO!

It was actually quite the opposite: he brought the scrutiny onto them. Treasury was alerted to suspicious financial activities on Spitzer's part, started an investigation suspecting corruption, and the escort agency got caught up in the ensuing investigation.

Ah! I didn't know that, or forgot it.

To my point, wonder if he could have devised to hire local independents at the rates I mentioned without one of them outing him, the way whatsername did with her smartphone pic of a snoozing Bieber post-coitus?

The fool paid the agency using a credit card. That is hard evidence right there. I believe there was an issue crossing state lines while committing his 'crime', but I am not sure what the implications of that are.

I must say though, that Mr. Spitzer investigated abuses on Wall Street a LONG time before the financial crisis of 2008 hit. He was ahead of his time. Wall Street, however, didn't like being investigated by Mr. Spitzer and retaliated by 'leaking' confidential information about his personal life and finances to Treasury and other agencies.

I was trying to remember what the media reported that Eliot Spitzer spent on his lady escorts. This article seems to say over $4,000 for an overnight. So I guess there is a high dollar market somewhere in Manhattan:

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/spitzer-spent-tens-thousands-call-girls-investigators-article-1.288335

That was in Washington, DC not in Manhattan. I remember seeing pictures of the $4,000 per overnight girl and thinking - she's not all THAT. She just looked like your average Jewish 20 year-something broad except that her tits were bigger. The girl next door, sorta. And SHE got somebody to pay up $4,000 per night (before splitting it with the agency)??? But then, I am gay. What do I know about what makes female escorts attractive?

Wall Street? SF and Silicon Valley are like that times ten. Young wall

Street guys are often ex jocks and on average outgoing and good looking. Bay Area rich guys are often nerdy engineering types. Tons of articles on the booming Trade trade in SF area.

Saturday Night Live had a Weekend Update segment with Seth Meyers and Amy Pohler about the subject (in a segment called "Really") and chastised Spitzer for asking if the escort would work without a condom--from the skit "Reee-ally? Perhaps we could understand that if you were client number 1, but client number 9?? Reee-ally"???
