Former CIA Director David Petraeus, whose career was destroyed by an extramarital affair with his biographer, was sentenced Thursday to two years' probation and fined $100,000 for giving her classified material while she was working on the book.

The sentencing came two months after he agreed to plead guilty to a federal misdemeanor count of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material.

The plea agreement carried a possible sentence of up to a year in prison. In court papers, prosecutors recommended two years of probation and a $40,000 fine. But Judge David Kessler increased the fine to "reflect seriousness of the offense."

In court, before being sentenced, Petraeus apologized "for the pain my actions have caused."

Petraeus attorney Jake Sussman said this was not a case about the public dissemination of classified information. He said it was about the wrongful removal of materials.

But prosecutor James Melindres said, "This is a serious criminal offense. He was entrusted with the nation's most classified secrets. The defendant betrayed that trust".

Either way, he was never going to serve jail time. I believe there was a poster here who warned about his betrayal long before this whole scandal erupted.

I wonder if remain private she would have become his 2nd wife.

Exactly, the "surge" gave Iraqis a couple of yeas of peace purchase with the blood of many Americans for them to make up their mind, put the balls on the table and chose their destiny. (I hate to sound like a neo-conservative on this one) He'll be back but he won't seat on the board of one of the many companies pimping the military industrial complex for a while. He could have been making millions of dollars but now that will have to wait for a few years (that sounded more like a libertarian)

Now is up to them to get rid of Isis or the run for the hills like the French Army in 1940.

We can always have peace in Iraq if we put a tyrant like Hussein (our friend for many years) or 50k Americans, but I don't think it makes sense.

Another office who forgot the main rule: keep your mouth shut!

Empires die by 1000 cuts, Iraq was 100 of those cuts.

I have not followed this as intently as perhaps I should have. I 'm presuming that the intelligence community has thoroughly investigated this author's activities and affiliations and either confiscated or perused her writings about the General.

Exactly Marylander...lol...can you say Halliburton?" Now there's a contract well into the seven figures.

I thought Petraeus was more sensible and savvy than just about anyone else about what worked and what didn't in Iraq, and am sorry he screwed things up for himself so royally. Even though this was at least in part a product of thinking with his dick, I don't think the comparison between his affair with biographer Paula Broadwell and hiring an escort is apt. As I understand it, Paula Broadwell was already an admirer of Petraeus before writing his biography. I expect their affair was something neither of them anticipated, thus it wasn't something going to see an escort instead could have solved. Plus affairs are emotionally different from hiring an escort. They're not just about the sex.

For similar cases, see Jack and Suzy Welch (an almost exact match, except they stayed together and married, she lost her gig with the Harvard Business Review over her relationship with the then-married Welch, whom she'd interviewed, and Welch divorced the woman he'd been married to when he met Suzy in order to marry her) and John Edwards and Rielle Hunter.

He was horny... that's why he got into an affair with a woman almost half his age. I'm horny but old, and that's why I've hired guys who could be my grandchildren considering that I'm 74, usually I hire guys who could be my sons. If was working I would have never messed with a younger journalist writing a story about me or anybody else: you just don't fuck/get fucked by coworkers. Why would you?

Clinton got away with many affairs, Petraus got caught and lost a fortune in "potential" money for it.

1 out of 5 women gets raped while serving, I don't want to offend anybody but next horny general might just join the good kids and use a roofie to avoid all the problems related with getting caught having an affair.

After the girl wakes up if she dares to talk, he can just say she made it up, isn't that part of the defense of a good lawyer all the time?

I hope been so blunt won't offend yinz. Please don't take this out of contexts but men like sex, and younger women who go after older men while writing their biographies are usually after influence or money, and she almost got it. She just got caught, just like Monica.

I'm more willing to give people the benefit of the doubt than you are, marylander. I also am more skeptical of the "men are led by their dicks" narrative. It's not just men; women too can pass the point of no return. It's more a matter of entitlement leading to reinforcement of the notion that men need not exhibit self-control; it's up to the women to do that. Blech.

How easily a man can get away with claiming nothing happened depends on whether he left biological evidence behind and whether the other person permits collection of a rape kit.

These women were likely after the men themselves. It's a fine distinction but an important one.

Think back to the last time you hit on a hot guy or called up a hot escort. Try to express, in a single sentence, why you wanted the guy. Were you longing for the chance to show off this man's looks to other people, to make them jealous? It's possible. But more likely, you were innately attracted to the guy's looks and would be happy to have sex with him even if no one else ever knew about it.

Similarly, the kind of rational gold-digging you describe exists, but it's far more rare than most men think. Many straight women are genuinely attracted to powerful and accomplished men, in precisely the same way you are to hot men. The attraction is to the man, not the money itself. That's why you see women dating men like this but politely turning down gifts and/or shopping trips.

I agree with QTR that an escort would not have saved the good general. He fell in love with an attractive woman who admired him, and hiring an escort wouldn't have changed that.

Giving the benefit of the doubt about what? She was attracted to power or money, aren't the 2 of them related? Maybe fucking him was the edge she wanted to get a career, similar to John Edwards mistress/baby mama.

What we know is that companies related to the military industrial complex were dying to have him go to congress wearing his uniform and talking about their anti-drone chimpanzee training system (it's a joke) they had in mind to avoid a drone attack on the White House and he screw his own life and career, not by having an affair but by getting caught doing it.

It's almost Shakespearean and I'm aware we're all in the same page on this, but we take minimum risk hiring escorts instead of fucking the office boy who happens to hav a crush on us because he wants to keep his job or sue us for sexual harassment. In corporate America, you just don't fuck coworkers.

Unfortunately institutions (army, Catholic Church, Colleges, etc. ) justice is denied because of rape kits go missing... Justice should be handle by judges who know about military justice but are friends with the "good kids" accused of rape and not into the "bros before hoes" mentally.

As the Italians say: "one hand washes the other, and together they wash the face".

In the gay escort world, escorts very occasionally do fall in love with clients. It helps if both are approximately the same age. The escort, whom I hired the most the 2000s, was hired several times by a couple for a threesome. When he started dating the younger man of the couple, I remember many conversations with the escort about whether the relationship would work. It did; they have been together now for a decade. But, the first years or so was very difficult, especially for the former client.

I know nothing about female escorts in the straight world, so I am not contradicting quiththeraven and FreshFluff --

just providing more information.
